Something's not quite right with this Ford [b:bd100e73e3]plow[/b:bd100e73e3] on CL.
I can't quite lay my finger on it. What's wrong?
Missing jointers aside. Maybe the bow in the hitch?
I have a similar Ford plow and I don't recall mine being bowed.
Not my ad, not affiliated, but I have bought from him before.

Yes I agree especially the second picture to me does not look right. In the second picture it almost looks like there are 2 large mould boards and two smaller mould boards behind them but only 2 beams for attaching them.

Bad photoshopping mabye?

Yep, looks decent to me, no odd bends, twists, extra welds, breaks etc. At first glance, in the first picture I thought the front coulter stem was bent but in the 2nd photo I can tell it was just an optical illusion. It has the extra moldboard extensions, original coulters and tail wheel so for that price I'd scarf it up! I noticed the disc harrow in the frame so I looked at his other items and yes it is the Dearborn Disc I'm looking for so I contacted him. Farwell isn't that far from me or you...

No, there's nothing wrong -those are called moldboard extensions, extra equipment options. The coulters are just twisted around, maybe that's it, but in field use they reset themselves and track right. The coulters are the correct later Economy Plow style that do not require check chains to keep them in line. That is a good plow, and if it is a 14" plow, I'd scarf it up fast that price. If it is a 10" or 12", it may work for a bit if points aren't dull, otherwise good for a show plow.

CORRECTION: The parts attached to the tops of the moldboards are called COVERBOARDS, also extra equipment plow accessories. Here's a scan of the original Dearborn Moldboard (Prior Model) Plow dealer brochure showing the Moldboard Extensions...

CORRECTION: those are called moldboard COVERBOARDS, the extensions attach to the rear of the moldboards, -see my reply to Royse above....

Tim,
As you know the bottoms on a 101 plow are pretty much identical to the one in your photo.
I have the coverboards on my 101.
When I first got the plow the wear parts were pretty rusty.
But after 8? seasons with it it shines pretty well now. But the coverboards are still rusty. Indicating to me they're not doing much work.

Coverboards were made to help assist in turning over the sod better so if you plow the same fields a lot, might not be scouring much sod...I can't my 3-bootom with my 8N and don't have anything bigger yet, to do so. The 8N will barely list the 3-bottom.

Hey Tim PloughNman Daley...

Quick question for ya since you were talking about it in this topic.

You mentioned that the economy plough does not need check chains to keep the coulters facing the right way... why? Just trying to understand the difference between the coulters on the regular plough and the economy plough.

I'm asking beacuse I have the regular plough (2 bottom), it came with coulters and jointers.... coulters have the check chains to keep them oriented in the correct direction however for some reason I always had a really hard time with coulters still moving around and facing the wrong way.

I figure either someone replaced the chain with something else that is not correct size or length... or I'm not attaching them correctly or I have them setup wrong.

This past spring I was fighting them so much I ended up taking them off and just using the mould boards only ... no coulters or jointers.

Thanks for any advice!

Before the days of minimum tillage, here in Iowa, all crop ground was plowed. sod , corn stalk ground , stubble ground, what have you!. Cover Boards were used to cover all the trash, old corn stalks etc. Cover Boards were not liked when plowing sod , as it kinked the sod , not leaving a smooth pattern.

When plowing under tall grass/weeds we would attach a #9 wire to the plow beam so it would drag along in the furrow. The wire would pull the weeds under the plow slice when it was turned into the furrow. A length of 1/4" chain would work better and last longer, but wire was cheaper.

Aside from the missing jointers, it looks OK to me.

The rectangular bar to which the lift pins attach looks to be as OEM design.

Yes, the coulters are worn out.

Great price.

It's the way they redesigned the coulter. It has appositive stop you set and position the stem so it swings to a set position and stops. You can use check chains if you want but they weren't needed with the Economy Plow coulters. Put a Prior Moldboard Plow or earlier Ferguson-Sherman coulter up to an Economy Coulter and you'll see it better. Also, the A&O Manual explains and shows how to set them correctly. The check chains attached to the mainbeam and a ring on the other end of the chain slipped over the jointer arm otherwise it won't work. You don't need to have the jointer blade attached, but you do need the arm for the ring attachment. See picture:

The front coulter would swing around and get caught up on the ORC at times so I added check chains... Check chains limits how far it can rotate/move.. I did lose a coulter before I added the chains luck me found it before a tire did...
