Diesel oil for Gasoline engines

Folks, I have a 2N and I'm wondering--would it hurt it to run 15/40 diesel oil? It doesn't use oil and I don't want it to start. It has 30 weight detergent oil in it now. Front mount and still 6 volts.

To answer the question:

I would not use a diesel oil that was not also rated for gasoline engines. The very popular Rotella T 15W40 is a dual rated oil:

API CJ-4, CI-4 Plus, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF / SM

The SM service category is for use in gasoline engines consequently that particular "diesel" oil is fine for use in most gasoline engines.

That said an N-series flathead engine in good shape will not benefit from a grade 15W40 oil so I stick to good old 10W30 which provides greater benefit.

I just bought a gallon of Tractor Supply "Traveller" house-brand straight 30W diesel oil, and they are now marking it as OK for automobile gasoline engines made before 1993, but not OK for engines made after that. Not sure what changes to auto engines happened in 1993, though.

Straight 30 weight is not recommended for newer gasoline powered cars and trucks.
I've been running 15W40 for years in every vehicle we own but the lawn mower, it calls for 30W.
Local fire dept locked up a small engine pump twice using 15W40, they switched back to 30W per repair shops recommendation, the pumps still going after 10 years.
165,000 miles since switching from 10w30 to 15w40 in our Dakota, still going strong.

Lots of opinions but there is no substitute for simple empirics. Those two grades have nearly identical viscosity curves and as far as viscosity goes they are so close as to be the same. The only meaningful difference is the 10W40 oil is a little heavier at operating temperature (3-4 cSt higher) and a modest boost in HTHS viscosity (.9 cSt) which translates into a thicker oil film at RPM and extreme heat. In a cold running 25HP N-series engine that buys you nothing and simply eats HP and fuel.

(quoted from post at 12:58:31 08/22/17) I'm looking for the 'SM' type oil; thanks, Old Hokie; I didn't know what the letters stood for.

Service categories that begin with C (e.g. Cx) denote diesel engine oils.
Service categories that begin with S (e.g. Sx) denote gasoline oils.
Many (but not all) diesel oils are also certified for use in gasoline engines.
