8N Idle speed

If all is well, a 9/2/8N engine should idle at 400 RPM or less but most will not do so after 60 or 70 years of wear in the throttle shaft bore.

Air leaking between the throttle shaft and the bore usually renders the idle air screw ineffective.

hjguy........what Dean sez.......to check yer throttle bore, spray some WD-40 on the shaft while idleing. Iff'n leaking, will change the idle. Also learn how to adjust yer idle. Set yer down-pointing mainjet to 2-turns and LEAVITT!!! Adjust yer side-pointing idlemix fer FASTEST idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle. Understand the difference??? I once got my eazy starting 6-volt 8N to idle at 350-rpms onna transistorized tachometer after a carbie rebuild.
...but... as a general rule, ennythang under 500-rpms is good.......HTH, carbie Dell

I assume you have tried the idle adjustment screw.
If you have backed that out, will it idle down if you
push on the head of the screw with your finger?

pushing on idle screw lowers idle, but it springs back fast
hen you have a linkage problem, adjust it.

FO_4 says to adjust the preload on the governor spring. Good book to have.

the gov spring is as required

more suggestions?
Unhook rod going to the carb and move the throttle towards idle, if it will idle down you still have gov spring or linkage problem

We're on the same page Mr. Geiger. That's why I asked him to
push on the idle speed adjustment screw, which slowed it down.
Governor out of adjustment or worn.
There's the old farmer's fix of bending the governor to carb
linkage to make it shorter too. I see a lot of bent ones.
Mine are all straight though.

Well one of my 8n is doing the same thing, but since I rarely ever run at an idle I do not worry about it. Maybe I will take the time and play with it and see what I can do. Canned peaches today so got that out of the way. Nothing better to can than a tree ripened peach.
