It my first time working on a 8n, the generator is not charging. I have to replace the radiator today. I have a 12v system in the barn, my question is how to wire it up. I have done it to my 9n with the 1 wire generator. The 8n generator has 3 wires, and not sure how to do it. Any help would be great.

How do you know the generator is defective and not the v/r?

Is your 12v generator an A circuit or B circuit? The v/r needs to match the generator.

Sorry should of put a little more info. The guy I got the tractor from said it's bad, he tested it. The kit I have is a conversion to 12v with a alternator. So instead of getting rebuilt I was going to just swap it out but when I did it to my 9n that was only 1 wire. Just not sure how to swap it.

Is the alt that you have a 3 wire or 1 wire alternator? Either way google search for ford wing diagrams, look for one by JMOR that covers what you have,

I did that to one of my 8n, only used the main large wire. the wire for the general field and ground are not needed.

for a cleaner installation you could get a new wiring harness, this site sells them.
 
Google 'wiring diagrams by JMOR'. Hint, you do not need the VR. There is one in the alternator.
 
So I decided to have the gen rebuilt,and got a new vr. The problem I'm having now is over charging, I disconnected ghetto field at the gen and vr made a jumper wire from the gen to vr still the same. When it comes to wiring I no good at that, any suggestions on what I should look at

e sure that you don't have the Field and Ground wires crossed between gen & VR......that will result in max output.
 
I will check that shortly from what I looked at last night it is, I believe that the ground on the gen goes to the bolt holding the vr on but I might have to open the harness to double check.
 
So I just checked ground etc all look good. Started it know at idle it is just under 15 and at full it is bouncing from 15- just udder 30 is that normal reading, and why would the needle bounce.
