Picked up an 8N project w/loader last Friday. Owner claimed it just needed a valve job but further inspection seems I might have to overhaul the engine.

When I rolled it off the trailer and into the garage I heard a clakity type sound in the trans. Do these have some kind of paul in the trans that would make that sound while pushing or should I tear the trans down to investigate?

It's easier to check out the trans in an 8n then on a 9n/2n just pop the trans/gear shifter cover. Flip the cover over and look to see if the spring is broke and your shifter
end hangs down too far and make contact. this may produce your clakity sound when in neutral and rolling. Also drain fluid and inspect gears. Would also like to add get
yourself some manuals they will be helpful.
Good luck with your new tractor project..

Welcome to the wonderful world of vintage Ford N-Series Tractor owners...as a newbie and as suggested, the best thing to do is to get yourself these essential Ford Tractor manuals and read religiously: the I&T F-04 Manual - a valuable piece to have as it covers the 9N, 2N, 8N, and NAA models and most major systems on how to remove and repair; next is a copy of the '39-'53 MPC (Master Parts Catalog) as it lists every part on all the N tractors with exploded assembly views; a copy or original of the Ford 8N Operator's Manual -much information including SAFETY -very important you know how to use it, especially if pulling loads; optional, but very effective others are a copy of the 8N Service Manual for Dealer Mechanics- again, major system R&R's shown; and a copy of the Dennis Carpenter Parts Catalog where you can get new, TISCO parts and new, exact-as-original licensed by Ford reproduction parts for your N. Thanks again for the helpful advice. I have downloaded the service and operators manual and will scour them.

Nothing beats the knowledge of those with experience on machines I have none with so I'm liable to keep asking questions as they come up.
