ok so after 2 hyd jacks...one on each lift arm on the housing and a big pry bar on the back where the draft spring is it finally popped loose...I have gone through it and am putting it back together...questions I have..the ring package..(3 steel rings) show 1 and 2 ring with bevel toward bottom and 3rd ring with bevel toward top of piston so that's how I installed it...sound ok?...second I have the gasket that goes between the cyl housing and main casting with 3 holes...then 2 separate paper gaskets that look like washers...when I separated this it had all of them between the front of cyl..my assumption is the 2 washer looking paper ones go between the rearmost bolts and the 3 hole long one goes under of course the front part of the cylinder...would this be right...im almost there so getting pretty excited...yes I did hone the cyl and no I didn't put in the naa piston as some guys said if there are lots of scratches in the cyl it would eat the oring up...as I bought this stuff before I could get the top off so it would be here to reassemble I wasn't able to assess the cyl walls so its going back like it was...thanks again for all the great advice and help...have a good one

The three-ring piston is the original style. When the NAA Tractor was released, the hydraulic system was changed the way Ford engineers wanted it. The piston now used a rubber O-RING with a leather backup washer/wiper. This piston will work on the older 9N, 2N, and 8N hydraulic cylinders too. If you haven't yet put it all back together, I'd go buy these parts:

PISTON - NAA-530-B
NAA-533-A - O-RING
NAA-473-A - BACK-UP WASHER

You really need to invest in the essential manuals if you are going be an N-Tractor Owner. The I&T F-04 manual details how to R&R the hydraulic system and the Master Parts Catalog will detail all the parts and exploded views of them. You can get all of these parts including the manuals at Dennis Carpenter Reproductions. I can direct you to the 'other' Ford N-Series Tractor web site where I wrote an article on how to do-it-yourself hydraulic repair. The gasket set is explained in full detail. Two small ones go on each end of bolt holes on cylinder bottom, one long one goes on opposite end of cylinder. My email is open...

I do not see anything in the manual about how to install the rings except to lube them, you are spot on with the gaskets.
I agree with you on using the steel rings in a scratched bore. If one is going to use the o'ring, then the cylinder also needs to be replaced. anything except a mirror finish will in time destroy the o'ring.
