Recommendations while changing clutch

I just bought my first 1948 Ford 8N tractor. Needs a clutch and a carburetor and radiator so far. What other parts would y'all recommend changing while I'm changing the clutch.

Put a new input shaft seal in the front of the transmission.

First, buy the manuals. All of them. Splitting the tractor & replacing the clutch is covered nicely in the I&T FO4 manual. (see tip # 39)

See tips 12 & 59 before you split it.

Check the ring gear & replace it if need be.

Have the flywheel resurfaced.

I'd have the clutch & p/p rebuilt. And I'd replace the t/o & pilot bearings & front transmission seal while I was in there.

Use the main shaft as your clutch alignment tool.

If you prefer new parts, do NOT order them off of eBay or buy them at TSC. Get parts (and the manuals) from this site or nnalert's.


Re the carb. rebuild it or have it rebuilt. I?ve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed.

Nascarngm88,Check flywheel ring gear, and replace if needed,resurface flywheel,Clutch Pilot Bearing, # 6203-2ZJ (SKF brand),Throw out bearing # N1087,Transmission input shaft seal # 13568.Recommend having your clutch disk and pressure plate rebuilt,rather than china junk replacements.Also a great time to check for leaking rear main seal and replace if needed.Cause you don't want to split it twice.Do it once,do it right!
