Another new one on me

I needed to replace the fuel line on the Fergy, so I ran the engine
with the gas off to minimize the mess and while I was at it I took
the sediment bowl off, dumped it and wiped it out. I put it back
on and snugged it up with my fingers only, making sure it was
centered and on the gasket. Turned the gas on and watched it
fill, along with the gas line and carb I presume. No leaks, so I
walked around to the other side of the tractor to make sure the
line wasn't leaking at the carb. No leaks there either. Then I
heard a tick. Wasn't sure what it was, tractor wasn't running or
moving. Another minute, another tick. About 30 seconds later the
glass sediment bowl shattered all over the tractor and the floor.

I've dropped them and broke them. I've seen them chipped when
not put on right. But I haven't seen one break with no one near it.
I grabbed one of my spares off an N, put it on the same way and
so far no leaks, no breakage. Not even with it running. Just odd.

I was a glass salesman in a large distributor. Sometime when walking thru the warehouse you could walk past a sheet of plate glass and it would shatter into pieces. All glass is inherently flawed with microscopic abnormalities, if the stars line up right, POOF!

"Quick! Buy a lottery ticket, your stars must be aligned."

LOL I'll get right on that! :)

Those Ferggies do that from time to time!!!

Replacement bowl maybe?, with the tiniest of flaws.
Maybe sometime in its history, someone scraped sediment out with a screwdriver or knife....scratch.

Michigan?...you know what that 'tick'...'tick' sound was from our ice hockey/ ice fishing days.....cracks forming. :)

One of the smart guys here can figure out the pressure it needed to hold from the gas weight in the tank when the carb/bowl/line was full.
.......it didn't

Glass is an inherently brittle material. I would suspect that the bowl was already cracked when you took it off. When put back on the stresses were a little different and caused the crack to propagate. Also older glass is more brittle than new glass and not able to handle the stresses as well. hope this helps. Thank you.
