will a 8N engine work in a 9N

I just purchased a 9N not running and see it has a side distributor, so I believe it has a 8N engine in it. There seems to be way to much travel in the clutch pedal. This has a sherman transmission as well. Will this engine work?

Sure,if the 8n engine has been switched out completely with the throttle control rod and governor from the 9n. You can adjust the clutch rod. If you do not know which Sherman trans you have I have a couple of videos on YouTube under Kirk-NJ that should explain that.
I would suggest that you pick up a manual for your tractor.
Good luck with your new tractor.

T L........quick answer, yes, the 5-nipple 8N engine will fit yer 4-nipple 9N. Howsomevers; you'll have timing issues 'cuz the 4-speed 8N engine is timed by flywheel ...vs... the kitchen table of yer 3-speed 9N. Clutches kenn be adjusted and Shermans are always NICE. Recommend you squander $30 (cheap) fer I&T FO-4 manual, it is the gospel source of info about 9N's vs 8N's........Dell

Yes, as a matter of fact I have a 2N tractor with an 8N motor in it and also have an 8N tractor with a 9N motor in it, don't know any history about the engine swaps but both had had been swapped out long before I got them
