9N gearshift rattles when rolled in neutral

Hi

Got a pretty heavy shower Monday which washed some mud onto the slab under a 9N which is waiting for the owner to decide what he wants to do with it. Pushed the tractor out of the way in order to clean the slab yesterday. When the tractor was moving the gear shift lever shook and made a rattling noise. Almost as if the lever while in neutral was contacting one of the gears.

Does anyone have any idea what may cause such a thing? I have not pulled the trans cover, but looking inside the fill hole it all looks clean and pretty.

Possible the pin through the shift lever is worn or rusted away which puts pressure in the forks causing light gear clashing. Lift the shifter boot and check the pin as well as its groove in the cover as it often gets worn badly causing the same symptom.

Well, I pulled off the half mile of electrical tape that was standing in for a shifter boot, dug out some kind of stuff that was in there (probably remnants of the old shift boot), and found a roll pin on the right side in a slot that looks like an upside down "T". There is no slot on the left. The 8N has a slot on each side and a hard pin which goes all the way across. The "T" slot has some wear obviously, but does not look like the slot was caused by wear. It kind of looks natural.

"Almost as if the lever while in neutral was contacting one of the gears."

That's exactly what is happening. I have built up several shift covers to raise the lever back up where it is supposed to be. I don't think it is a problem when the transmission is in gear.

1st picture is right side, second picture is left side. The black spot on the right side is just tape residue. No evidence of there ver having been a slot or hole there.

I had the same problem. Underneath the shifter is a metal part to block the starter switch from engaging when the tractor is in gear. Mine was broken on one end and dropped down far enough that it contacted a gear when the tractor rolled, making the rattling sound. You'll have to remove the transmission top to check it.
