Friend of a friend has an 8N tractor for
sell out by the road, someone stole the
battery, top link, and the carburetor
off of it in last day or so, probably a
night job, was just noticed this
afternoon when someone else stopped by
to look at it. The owner is looking for
a carb to make a sale, has anyone tried
these cheap carburetors for sale on
Amazon ? Depending on everyone's input i
may order one myself....

Forgot the Amazon ad....

Not from that seller, but it looks like the Tisco aftermarket.
They'll work Ok once you get them adjusted; most of the time.
I have a brand new one here that wouldn't work at all out of the box.
If that happens, you should be able to send it back.

OK, this is strictly my own personal opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. Buy your books and DVDs at AMAZON, buy your tractors parts at reliable dealers/suppliers. Also, never ever buy any parts for these old N's "new", and I'm talking about components like carburetors, distributors, starters, generators, water pumps, governors, radiators, hydraulic pumps, and more unless no other choices are available. The main original units can be rebuilt with new parts/kits easily and a lot cheaper than buying a new part. You can find original, rebuilt and non-rebuilt carbs on fleabay for reasonable prices. Even if you buy a non-rebuilt carb, the investment in it and a part kit (about $50) is much better than dealing with some 'new' piece of Cheena made junk. For future reference, Royse here and I both will rebuild your carb if'N you want a professional job and/or are too shy to try it yourself. There are DIY instructions available -try the 'other' club site... My EMAIL is open too..

Tim, I don't think you understand the guys problem, he don't have a carb since his was stolen and unable to sell tractor in non running condition, no junk tractor graveyards around and to buy one off of fleabay and then rebuild it would be cost prohibitive in trying to make a sell, he ordered one of these $58 carbs, and if it works out for him I'm going to try one myself,I've rebuilt many but at this price you can't go wrong if it works

did you see the most recent review?

"had to retap the threads for fuel line.then it would only run with choke closed no matter how you adjusted then it wouldn`t run at all.returned for refund"

I' take such reviews with a massive grain of salt. Folks that butcher a new part because something doesn't fit as expected don't instill me with a lot of confidence. A seller that would refund the price of the butchered part can't be all bad

If he modified it, he's lucky he could get a refund.
That whole elbow is a replaceable part with a screen. $5.

The one I have here that wouldn't work had to be fixed too.
But not the elbow; the internal passageways were plugged.
Once it was fixed it works Ok.

I just ordered one, I'll let you guys know how it turns out, my friends buddy ordered one yesterday so he could make a sale on his 8N that got parts stolen off of...

for sure, but common issue with products from the land of almost right.

I bought an import carb for my 8N from one of the catalog suppliers, I forget which one. It is not cast iron but rather some type of zinc based material (?) and does not rust, very nicely made and finished. I have used it for several years now, however the enrichment circuit is not correct. The tractor will tend to stall when placed under load or the throttle is pulled open in a rapid motion. Once, at full operating temperature on a hot day every thing works good. I will probably rebuild the OEM to re-install, then tinker with this carb at some point.

I would suggest if one is not familiar with these tractors, how they should run and is able to repair them....then leave these carburetors for others who enjoy a challenge.

As a side note, I installed an import carb on my 16 HP Kohler. It would not work with my electric fuel pump. After installing a new very low pressure pump it is fine. But, again some tinkering was required.
