8N With Weak Hydraulics

I have an 8N (Front Mount Distributor) with weak hydraulics. It will lift light implements, blade, carry all, plow etc, but it has no where near the lifting strength of the 2N we had when I was growing up. Then I put a large load on the lift that is tries to lift but can't, I can hear a slight knocking sound but the arms wont move. It takes a few hours to let the 3 point down when left parked.

I have been considering rebuilding the hydraulic system to get it working correctly. What all is involved in repairing this issue?

I would start by getting the FO-4 service manual.
It may be as simple as needing a real good cleaning.
You could get a pressure gauge and see what kind of pressures you are getting.

Yes, you should try draining it, removing the top and right side covers, cleaning it out, maybe running some of the tests that John Smith has on his site, and then re-filling with new hydraulic fluid. It could be as simple as the old hydraulic fluid being contaminated with water, or the lift quadrant position being set incorrectly.
