I have noticed some 8n fords has like an external glass bolted on the side where the air cleaner is. I know some people when restoring these 8n fords want complete originality. just wondered how you can tell if the glass jar is original as I'm sure a lot got broken.

earborn Motors Corporation was a tractor and implement distribution company established by Ford Motor Company when Ford terminated the production-distribution agreement with Harry Ferguson Inc. in 1946. Dearborn Motors became the primary distributor for the Ford 8N tractor as well as a line of implements, service parts, and other farm equipment. Ford Motor Company purchased Dearborn Motors Corporation in 1952 and integrated the tractor business into the company's Tractor and Implement Division. Those Cyclone pre-cleaners were Dearborn. The 'other' N*trac*tor web site has most historical information & those who are more of the 'originality' group, so I would look thee for your answer.

pinball.......often times, a little GREEN model tractor is captured inside the GLASS jar........Historian Dell

Actually, the extra filtration was 'cuz it's DUSTY when you use mechanical shovels or sweeps to KILL weeds between rows of corn or cotton. Why do you wanna kill weeds? 'cuz they compete with crop fer moisture. Now daze, they use CHEMICALS to kill weeds.

I believe you are referring to the CYCLONE AIR PRE-CLEANER that was indeed a Dearborn Accessory, not an aftermarket item, and was available at extra cost from any Ford Tractor dealer. There was a unit specifically for the 9N/2N tractor air cleaners; one for the 8N model; and one for the NAA Model. None are interchangeable. The supplier was The Air Cleaner Service Co, of Denver, CO. The unit fit into the stock air cleaner vent port when original screen was removed. The unit secures any standard round 1/2 Pint Mason Jar, but Cyclone made their own special one. Originals turn up often and Dennis Carpenter repops all the parts except the actual housing itself. There are two rubber gaskets -one inside the cup inlet where the jar snugs up into, and the other on the pipe that fits into the air cleaner on your tractor. The glass jar and bail are also made and sold by Carpenter as well. Here's what the 8N Cyclone looks like. The Parts Accessory Catalogs are on the other Ford N-Series Tractor Club web site and I am not allowed to post that here..

Ferguson retained control of the majority of distributorships through the 1950's and Ford Tractor could and did not gain control of all of his distributorships until well into the 1960's. I know as I was researching effects on dealers and their opinions about the then only four Ford Tractor Sales Districts as compared to the Ferguson controlled distributorships at Ford Tractor in 1959.
