Starter drive extended

I'm working on an 8N starter with ratchet drive. It's sticking in extended position. I can't figure out how to contract it. I don't have a wheel grinder that will turn it much less turn it fast enuff to retract it. If I can get it off the driveshaft I might be able to do it. It won't move enuff to get the dowel pin out. I've tried clamps. Any ideas?

That seems to be my best option. I hate to hear it clanking like that. If it doesn't retract, it may end up in the bottom of the case.

DON TX[/quote]hat 'clanking' have you heard? When the engine starts, it should spin drive fast enough to make it retract, then no 'clanking'.

It doesn't. It just bounces off the ring gear. Produces a clanking sound. Hurts my ears. ((

Sounds like not proper bendix or not installed properly. How to get it off? You just have to improvise. Clamps, wedges, etc.
