Hey folks! I installed a new proofmeter on my 1952 8N. It has been converted to 12 volts,if that matters. When it is just barely idiling it shows around 2200 on the proofmeter. Now we know it would be screaming by then. I doubt it's the throttle rod because at idle I'd guess it's around 400-500. But the proofmeter reads why much higher. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Bad proofmeter, or possibly the wrong one. Was it made for the 8N?
The proofmeter on some other four speed tractors ran off the
hydraulic pump, not the governor.

3spd would have been a 9N or 2N transmission.
Clutch and left brake on the left, right brake on the right.
Could have an 8N motor in a 9N or 2N, but I wouldn't think the
8N dash would fit to hold the proofmeter because the steering
gear box was part of the top of the transmission on a 9/2.

Ok, four speed it is. :)
I know if you put one for a Jubilee in an 8N it reads way too fast.
Although I don't remember exactly how much too fast.
Maybe the one you got was mixed up in packaging or is faulty.
Can you exchange it?

Royse I really doubt it. I can check but since I installed it....well I'm sure you know the drill. Not that it matters cause I know how after markets are, it looks exactly like the old one.

That is why I like to buy from this site, good customer support.

some years back there was a bad run of new aftermarket proofmeters.
That's how they acted.
Maybe you ran into one of those.
A trustworthy vendor that I deal with was selling them for just a couple bucks to get rid of them. (with the flaw listed in the description)
I bought one to fill the empty hole on a junker. Looked nice, LOL..even worked..at idle, just like yours, rev it up, pegged the needle.

If you put one for a jubilee in a jubilee it reads too
fast, about 500 rpm too fast. Sent one back, next
one about the same. This was about 10 yrs ago and
still works good except inaccurate.

would say that the proofmeter is bad, because the simple substitution of an NAA meter in place of the 8N meter should cause a reading of 56% too high, not the 500% that you see.
