It was running fine, now won't start.I noticed the wire going to the coil laying against the exhaust manifold burning the insulation.Im sure It shorted something out.Is there a short answer o what it would be or do I need to pull the distributor.12 volt conversion, nor sparta at the plugs.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

i'd check to see if the OEM ballast resistor on the back of the dash has burnt up. if it reads ok on an ohm meter - .3 ohms cold iirc, but obviously, not infinite ;) - i'd replace the wire that melted into the manifold and try again. i don't know how a short before the coil would damage the coil or distributor.

No reading on the resister except on the 2 screws that attach it to back of dash.I replaced the damaged wire still no spark.

You didn't damage anything by melting the coil wire.

Keep checking for battery voltage. Got it at the ignition switch? The resistor?

At the top of the coil? Check that first; if you have battery voltage there (and about half that if the points are closed) then it's time to pull the distributor & see what's going on.

Your checking voltage, not resistance.

Don't worry about the resistor; if it fried, jump it until you can order a new one.

Put your meter on volts & start at the coil. Keeping moving toward the battery until you find battery voltage.

But...........

If you have battery voltage at the coil, the problem is in the distributor. @ bolts, the coil wire nut & it's off the tractor to check. Post back w/ results.

Bruce, I'm not understanding "@ bolts, the coil wire nut & it's off the tractor to check. Also how do I jump the resistor?
Tom

Run a wire directly from the non grounded battery terminal to the top of the coil. If you tractor starts then the problem is in the wiring ahead of the coil. If not, then the problem is in the distributor.

Tom...........NO PULL the dizzy. As fer the melted wire, SLOPPY bubba 12-volt conversion. It shuld be intuitively obvious, 1st step, REPLACE the wire so it don't flop on yer HOT manifold. Yeah, I gitt itt, weird 4-nipple front mount dizzy. Me? I'd un-snapple the capple and PRY open the points and sticka corner of $1-bill (cheap) between the points and PULL. Polish the INVISIBLE CORROSION from between the points. Simple, eh? BTW, the 4-nipple dizzy is designed to have the points replaced on the kitchen table. (really) Remove the 2-bolts and walk. Replace the points (0.015) and due the $1-bill trick. Re-installation is a reveral of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts and install the rotor. Rotate the rotor until the OFF-SET tang fits the OFF-SET slot in the camshaft. Now tighten the 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh?.......HTH, the amazing Dell

Good. Now remove the wire & find the problem. If you run it very long w/o the resistor, you will melt the coil.

A year or two, right HFJ? ;)
