OT (apple vs android)

(quoted from post at 18:21:34 06/21/17) wife wants a iPhone for her birthday next month.

is there an advantage to either system ???

thanks.
f you decide something different than what she wants, then look out! Therefore, advantage: iphone.

Android is a lot cheaper. But as JMOR points out you need to keep her happy ;-) IMO, for the average consumer there is no real technical advantage to iPhone but there are many who would disagree.

If the wife wants a iPhone trust me, no android will do..

Not that an iPhone is better, it's just one of those things that anything else is NOT an iPhone.

I have never owned an iPhone btw.

I have owned iPhone from their inception. Now on iPhone 6. Wouldn't want anything else. All my kids are employed techies and they all have iPhones. They tell me it is the only phone to have.

I have had IPhone and Android both. 6 of one half dozen of the other. But like others have said, if IPhone is what she wants then I would get her the IPhone.

I am a retired techie who has never owned an iPhone. I have owned lots of other techie things including a POS Windows phone and I judge them by actual utility not glamour. My techie kids tell me I must have a Facebook and Twitter account. I don't. If I decided to replace the POS Windows phone it would be Android. If my wife asked me for an iPhone I would buy one. Simple as that.

Which windows phone you got? Our family has 3, I've never seen another person with one. ;)

I like mine... Nok 1020

Can't beat the camera..

Either will most likely do what she needs, but I'd first ask if she knows what adding the lower case "i" to the word "phone" means.

Does she know she is specifying an operating system, a group of compatible hardware and a limited group of carriers?

Many that think iphone is synonymous with smartphone. Instead of a subset.

I work in IT and support phones on the back end. I use what
the company buys me. Was Blackberry, then Android, now iPhone.
This is not company related in any way, just my opinion.

Cost - Advantage Android
Reliability - Advantage iPhone
Number of places to get apps - Android
Limiting virus/malware (because there's only one place to get legitimate apps) - iPhone
Logging for corporate environment troubleshooting - Android
Support - iPhone
Home harmony in your case - iPhone ;)

Mine is a Nok 640 and yes it has a very nice camera and I can talk to it. Actually nothing wrong with the hardware or OS but unlike Android or IOS there is a dearth of apps for Windows. But I don't need a lot of phone apps so I am fine with that. The only app I use on a regular basis is navigation and that is far superior to the OEM nav in the wife's BMW.

The phone was an XMAS gift from one of my techie sons who also bought one for himself and his mother. My other two sons have iPhone and Android respectively. The iPhone son also sports Air Jordans ;-)

Until recently I had an iPhone and an iPad. Both very expensive when new, both orphaned by Apple and stuck at the last iOS that Apple would let me have. Another year later all of my apps have updated to take advantage of iOS upgrades I don't have and both pieces of hardware slowly morphed into paperweights. Apple forced me to upgrade so I did - to an android phone and a Windows 2-in-1 laptop. Life is good again for much lees than I spent the on the iCrap. I don't see myself ever going back. I hated iTunes anyway.

"I hated iTunes anyway."

Can't say that I'm a fan of iTunes either.
But like most Apple products, it has it's cult-like following.

The unsupported hardware is not limited to Apple.
Intel is now producing a processor they call KabyLake.
It will only run Window 10 or newer according to Intel.
HP, Dell, Lenovo, doesn't matter. If it's Intel, it's Windows 10.

Kind of the same deal.

Windows 7 mainstream support ended more than two years ago.
Windows 8.1 mainstream support ends this coming January.
Extended support continues later of course.
As long as you want to run it on old hardware.

P.S. I'm typing this on an 8+ year old laptop running Windows 10.

thanks fellas.

I should have been clearer in asking the question. I said iPhone as a generic reference to all gizmo phones. the wife cares NOT what gizmo she carries as long as it fits her needs. me? I still use a "flip" phone.

"My techie kids tell me I must have a Facebook and Twitter account"

My grandkids tell me the YT is the facebook for old men.

Like this? ;)

The wife and I went over to "smart" phones about 2 years ago. We went with the 1phone on advice from others. Neither of us use all the functions available but we use more of them then I would have thought possible. Kinda nice to be able to access the internet wherever I am within range of a tower. I've use it several times while helping out my BIL and nephew while working on a piece of equipment. I use the GPS app too.

I wish ! like this one. my 2nd generation c-phone.

I miss rotary phones and I especially miss the anonymousness of rotary pay phones. not mention phone booths. all
kinds of good uses for them.

Hmmm... I am a software engineer. I own an Android phone. I see more Android phones than iPhones among my fellow engineers.

Not many companies support old hardware or software for much more than 10 years. In that regard MVS has to be the OS rock of the ages. First introduced by IBM for System/360 in 1974 and currently embodied and supported as z/OS. It is still running 1960's System/360 software in hardware emulation. You pays your money and you gets your support. Just ask the folks at the SSA

That's because software engineers are underpaid

my SIL avoids apple products as much as she avoids fat men. my kids all have iPhones. the young people at the local Verizon store prefer android.

I will print all this and give it to my wife. she is on her own.

ou can bet a cup of coffee that if the salesman recommends one of the products over another that he is selling, that he makes more profit on the one he recommends.

in general I agree. but if a shop/store is selling different brands of goods and one product name is far out selling the others I think the other brands may do a little investigating and if it turns out the employees are systematically recommending one brand over the other brands said employees may be out of work.

My Dad worked for BlackBerry, I can tell you first hand they seem like they are one of the worst ones out there.

I've only had 1 smart phone, its an android, and I'm still using it.

I phones are supposed to be the best I think, but I've preferred android for ease of use.

As already stated, if she wants an iPhone, get one, ;)
