Seat Time - Spring Shank

Did two plots so far. Whenever my wheels spun, I'd lift it up a hair and carry on lowering and raising.

The deeper soil is still moist and heavy but maybe I should try just three shanks with these chisel plow sweeps on the front row . . . one on each end and one in the middle. (?)
They really pull it down.

Thanks Colin,

The PNW Jungle; I like it!
To many southern residents, it must look like that.

Straight ahead of the tractor are all yellow/orange salmon berries so I snack from the tractor seat when I pass by. :)

Most of my salmon berries are the red variety.
I should start using netting because the robins raise their young almost exclusively on them . . . until after the cultivating and a worm feast.

Leave'em all on it and make'er work...

HOBO,

Thanks for helping with my indecision.
As a matter of fact I've been thinking all day about putting some height limiter chain brackets on the tractor so that I can use them for my MF cutter but also for the cultivator.

If I hang the cultivator from chains for shallow passes, I can then let the chains out a link or two for the next deeper passes so I won't have to feather the hydraulics at all.

Do people use draft control for these cultivators as well as for plowing?

Thanks,
Terry

If your draft control and spring is working properly you might be
able to try that. You will have to set your quadrant lever and
once set move your wing nut stop to that position so at the end of
the row you raise up and at the start of the new row lower to stop
nut position.
On small plots you might be half way done before you get it set. I
plowed a 55 acre plot with a bunch of guys this year and the draft
control worked like a charm and was a pleasure to plow with, no
rocks

Kirk,

Pretty small potatoes, the plots I'm doing. :)

Thanks for that easy to understand little draft tutorial.

I like the way the cultivator pulls up rocks.

Is this reasoning sound?
If I tilt the cultivator so that the rear row of "beet sweeps" hits the ground first, will that limit the pull-down of the front chisel plow sweeps.

By the way, I took off all those add on metal leggings and replaced all the plow bolts.

Thanks,
Terry

You're right. I need to learn how to use draft control properly and appreciate it for what it is.

Thanks,
T

Can someone post a close up of what the quadrant stop looks like? Mine is gone.

I know I can just put one together, but just wondering.
Maybe I should use the clip on the end of that safety warning chain, braze a nut onto it.

Thanks,
T
