Ford 9n to use a Rototiller

I read somewhere in these forums that you cannot use a Rototiller with an N series tractor without a modification, reason they were not yet invented. Can someone discuss this issue with me.

A friend of mine borrowed a tiller and tried to use it on his 51
8n. The PTO shaft was the wrong length and wouldn't hook up.

I have heard N's are geared to fast for a rototiller to work very
well.

I did see an n successfuly used with a
rototiller once, it took two actually,
one fitted with a Sherman combo to slow
it and operated at an idle. This was
connected by a neap to the bumper hitch
of a second n which was in neutral and
ran the rototiller. Worked well but took
two operators.

it has nothin to do with the rototiller not being invented yet,[ even though thats true] the problem is in most soil the n tractor in first gear is too fast for proper tilling, unless the tractor has a sherman aux trans which will slow the tractor down, the problem then is the sherman also slows down the pto, now a few people do manage to get it to work, but if your soil is hard or has a high clay content, id rip it first, there is a rare and very fragile after transmission aux tranny called a howard, which is designed to run a tiller, good luck finding one of those today, for garden prep with an n most people use it like it was made to be used, no prep soil plow, dics, then harrow it, if the soil has been prepped before in say the last few years just disc and harrow and its ready

Bilhar........iff'n ya just gotta roto-till yer garden, go renta 2-cyl YamaBottaDeer all set up with roto-tiller. $50 (cheap) When we first moved here at the foot of 14K Mt Rainier (60-mi south of Seattle) my wife and I were discussing how to terrace the south-facing hillside to gitt the most heat and grow corn and tomatoes. So she hires one of her college students to dig terraces witha shovel to place RailRoad Tyes to hold the dirt. Ya don't due that. Ya go down to the corner back-hoe outfit and HIRE it done. Ol'TomCat brings his back-hoe 1/2-mile and digg'em out. The next thing I know theres a pile of topsoil onna blue tarp so it don't shift thru the crushed gravel. Ya don't due that, ya hire the back-hoe guy witha scoop on the frontend of his tractor. Dunno where my wife gott the topsoil but it nebber even grew weeds. I haffa 22-in Troy-Built roto-tiller that works just fine on my terraces. But thats 'cuz I know how to build terraces and re-inforce them so they don't fall down the hillside. .......HTH, farmer Dell
