Unless this is some type of old time fix for a 8N rear seal I don't think that plastic someone has cut out and put between the hub and brake drun isn't suppose to be there!

Demaxx,That is a farmer fix to stop the brake drum from rubbing on the brake backing plate,because of a worn axle and hub that goes on to far.

That is good to know! I am putting a new hub and seal on it now. It has new brakes and they are clean and dry. Hopefully what I am doing will take care of this problem and I can do away with the plastic spacer.

Den n Ms when I read the worn axle and hub it had me worried a little about the axle. I know the axle is made of harder metal than the hub Per John Smiths how to article. I had to walk out to the shop and check the hubs on the axle, and compare them. The new one is a huge difference than the old one. I can see why they made the spacer now.

With that said this isn't an old repair. The seal and the brakes are fairly new! They also left out the axle gasket between the bearing and the hub. I cannot for the life of me see why someone would do a repair, and not do a complete repair, that is going to do nothing but continue to leak?
 
Well I won't be going back together today! Once I got everything apart, got some good light on the bearing and cup, I decided to put a new bearing in the old girl. With what little I do with a tractor, I may could have packed it and it last for many more years. I just refuse to put something back together not repaired completely.

The good news is I have plenty of time to clean everything like John Smith showed in his "How to" article.
