On tractor run and had to pay attention or would have ended up in ditch, looked at steering gear overhaul kits in catalogue and am surprised
the kits are bushings and seals and gaskets. What about the gears and their wear?. Will changing ushings seals etc. take play out without
changing the gears ?. It is an early 47 8n
.

If all you have is bushing wear, I'd be surprised.

Chances are it's the worm and/or sectors.

Sectors are NLA and the worm goes for $400 or so.

Get a 2-bolt box & rebuild it if need be.

You wont really know until you get the box off and disassembled .

If your steering wheel moves up and down it is your upper or lower bearing . The lower bearing is where water would settle in a box .

It is up to your time and money available . If this is an old work tractor chances are overhauling it will will be good enough .

When I got my 3000 you could not drive it down the paved road . I needed a lower bearing and 4 tie rod ends .

Could you say more about a two bolt box? Is it a steering box off of a newer 8n that will fit any 8n. $400 for a worm gear sounds a little steep I tried adjusting this box but I think that boat sailed, I hate to order bushing etc. kit and then find out I need to spend another$400. Any test that will say you need gear replacement?

Not Bruce, but yes, it's the later box. You have to swap the
linkages from side to side when changing from old to new.
That's a perfect time to replace the tie rod ends if needed too.
