Finished Step Up rebuild, assembly complete, no starter

Just finished Sherman Step Up rebuild, had a broken shifter shaft.
With tractor split, like others I couldn't not touch the starter bendix which resulted in it being locked in the engaged position. So I knew that after first start the racheting bendix would probably disengage. It did. But, my first attempt to start the newly assembled tractor resulted in the starter motor just moving a tad bit when pressing the starter button. Then nothing. The starter button didn't feel "right". So I rolled the tractor down the hill with key on and it started up. Drove it around, up another hill and stopped to see if the starter would turn by preesing the starter button. It didn't. Rolling start again.

I have tried disconnecting the battery lead to the starter, and jumping the starter with a battery charger @ 12 volts/6amps. Nothing but a low 'electrical sound', but the starter wouldn't turn.

The jump start probably ruled out that it was a solenoid issue. Any further tests for the starter, bench test? Where's the best place to purchase a starter for a 1947 2N?

Thanks ahead for any help, Michael. I have lurked here for years. Below is the pic from 2006 a year after rebuild by a local tractor guru (Stan) from Eagle, Idaho.

welcome to YT, michael :)

i think most here will say don't get a new one, have yours rebuilt.

Thanks for the welcome, and recommendation. There's a local shop I will take it to tomorrow.

A battery charger will not turn the starter, not enough amps, if need be hook the charger to a known good battery and jump the starter off of that battery

I also tried a jumping from a running John Deere 110 but that may have not been large enough too. Thanks.

Don't buy a new one! Get your old one rebuilt by an automotive electric repair shop. New ones are JUNK.

Doh, jumped the starter with Ford pickup and it turns over like a champ. So low/dead battery is the real issue, not surprising though the battery is at least 13 years old.

Thanks everyone.
