2N governor oil leak

i have sprung a leak, appears to be either coming from the bushing or the bottom of the gasket. the throttle arm has a lot of side to side slop - toward and away from the block. is this the likely culprit? what should i be looking for?

HFJ ,Look for a worn sloppy bushing on the governor shaft and a worn out seal.Replace the governor gasket, reface the governor housing if it is warped and not flat. Also be sure to put the short bolt in the top hole of the governor so it doesn't hit the cam gear and tear it up.That is a bad costly mistake some people have done!

"what should i be looking for?"

A new Kubota Cab tractor, around 40 HP with a front mounted
snow blower. If you decide you don't like the new Kubota, I'll
trade you my 2N with a good governor for it! LOL
Sorry Howard, I just couldn't resist!

I would clean it all up with brake cleaner and then watch carefully
for where the leak starts. Quite possibly the linkage bushing as
you already suspect. Or the housing may be warped. They can
be sanded flat by using a sheet of sandpaper on a true surface
such as a piece of thick glass.

Cool thing about brake cleaner is that you don't have to get it
perfectly clean. When the brake cleaner dries it "looks" dry, so
any new leaks will show up as a wet spot on top of it.

Most governor leaks are caused by over tightening the bolts on the governor and warping the governor housing.

Remove the governor and remove the gasket.Clean both surfaces good and apply a good bead of black silicone RTV gasket making material and then install
the governor. It will never leak again. Don't even have to straighten the governor housing.

thanks, den.

i have read many horror stories about inadvertently swapped bolts. that might be the only thing i know about governors
but a reminder never hurts :)

aMEN ON THAT kUBOTA--MAKE IT 2--i'LL TAKE ONE ALSO..WITH 6' ROTARY
CUTTER..wILL WAIT AND WATCH ANXIOUSLY FOR IT TO SHOW UP IN MY DRIVEWAY..

zane, is this something that would happen years after the bolts were tightened? i've had it for six years and haven't touched them, and the leak is brand new.

i sure like the sound of your solution :)

 i'm pretty darn sure the only thing i won't like about that orange boy is its pricetag. but, are u talking about the 2N with the platinum oil pan? maybe we can talk :)

i don't have any brake cleaner. is a good wipedown and gumout an acceptable substitute?

well, the gasket on the right side (looking from behind) is definitely weeping. i can't tell if the bushing is leaking yet.

the short bolt at the top, 11 oclock or so, is not a bolt. it's a nut and stud :?

(quoted from post at 09:36:12 06/11/17) Here's a question partially pertaining to this thread; what metal are the governors actually made of?
which part?

The housing. I haven't really looked into it(magnet, grinder, etc) just curious what they're constructed of.

my magnet doesn't see it. i hope it's aluminum.

the bushing seems fine, the goop is setting now. hopefully life is good again.

well, this story has a happy ending... kinda.

black goop is wonderful, no more leaking gasket. too bad it appears the bushing is leaking after all. my gut feeling is that it's not that bad of a leak yet, and i'm gonna just keep an eye on it for the time being with a sheet of something under it between mowings. hopefully i can get away with waiting till the offseason to pull it back off.

oh, and a pro tip (for those of u who don't know everything there is to know about these tractors like i do ;) ):

to optimize the performance of your newly-serviced governor, try reconnecting the control arms to it before starting the tractor

thanks everyone :)
