Ford 8n fuel problem

Just got a Ford 8n which seems to be in pretty good condition. The problem I am running into is getting fuel into the sediment bowl. Now, I am going to list what all I have done and let's see if anyone can figure this out.

I removed the entire assembly that goes into the bottom of the tanks (bowl, valve and all). I then cleaned the tank out completely. The reason for putting the new one in was because I already had a new one here and was gonna have to order a new gasket for the bowl and previous owner broke the turn knob for the fuel.

(Note, before when you would have fuel on it would not drip down into the bowl. Figured it was clogged)

So, I got the whole new assembly installed, hooked up all the lines back the way they were (original lines not rubber) and once I got it all hooked up I then put fuel in, turned fuel knob and got not a drop of fuel. So, I am back to square one.

So, I end up loosing and undoing the main line that comes from the fuel down to the carb. As soon as I got it loose I turned knob and gas poured into bowl. So, my thinking was clog in the line.

So, I ended up putting line back on and going over to the carb. I then loosened the fuel line that goes into the carb. Turned the knob, fuel comes out.

Does this make any sense to anyone? Fuel cap is off, line is not blocked from the assembly all the way down to carb, yet if all of it is hooked up like it should be, I am getting no fuel dropping down into sediment bowl. Also engine is not hot. Dead cold engine and has not been started for last couple days which it ran like crap when I was able to actually get it started. Had to try to flutter choke but did not last long at all and would die.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

your problem was just trapped air. put it all together and remove the plug in the bottom of the carb. if you get fuel, you are good to go.

when the carb's float valve is closed, there is nowhere for the air in the sediment bowl to go. the passage from the tank into the bowl is not large enough to let the air bubble back up into the tank. when the float opens the valve, the weight of the gas will push the air out thru the carb. the behavior u have described is normal.

I just went out and turned the fuel on. Then I took the plug out the bottom of the carb. All seemed to flow good and I watched the fuel bowl and it never did go down in fuel. Hopefully that is all it was. Appreciate the quick help!

Will find out more tomorrow after changing out and giving it a test run. (Still have to find some place locally that has a flexible tube to go from the carb to the breather considering whoever had this did not have anything one it. would be nice if I could find metal one, but flexible would work if I had a part#) Thanks again!

Anytime you remove the sediment bowl. You have to leave it loose
to let the air out and turn the gas on until the bowl fills then
tighten it.

Yes, sounds like the typical vacuum issue. You are doing all the right things for problem solving. When you open the fuel valve two turns and line is disconnected from the carb, do you have a steady stream flow or is there hesitation, starting and stopping?

Actually there is no need to let the air out. An air lock is a good indication that the gasket will not leak. Just run the tractor and all will be well.

I tried to quote several different folks on here, but not doing it right or something. have not had my coffee this morning. Anyway, the flow was coming out great when the line was loosened. no hesitation at all. But once I tightened it, flow would just stop. So, I took out the bottom plug on carb and let fuel run out till bowl filled up then tightened it back up. Will try to see if all is good here later today if possible, but I am pretty sure it will be ok now. I appreciate all the help though!

This site sells a new metal intake pipe ( chrome ) for $15 + shipping or ebay has used ones all the time .

You have a lot of heat coming off of the exhaust which is very close to where the intake tube is located . Rubber hose might not last long . You make be able to get a straight piece of 1-1/2" exhaust pipe and splice in a bent radiator hose .

Make a list of the little things you want before ordering . Shipping is about $10 minimum per order but not much for each additional part . Gaskets , shifter boot , etc .

I went and purchased a "temp" flex hose. Had to go to napa because the other parts stores have people that don't know what a screwdriver is. I plan to actually order the pipe, but this will get me by for now. (crosses fingers)
