1945 2N - lift not working after rebuild

I'm hoping somebody with knowledge of the 2N/9N hydraulic system might be able to help me out with this one...Last fall I replaced the "Ram cylinder, piston and rings) & rebuilt the Hydraulic pump. Tractor worked great all winter and spring. About a month ago I was using a 1/4 yard back bucket moving dirt. I was aggressively backing into a dirt pile picking up some what heavy loads and moving them around. about an hour into it the lift stopped working. I tried adjusting the control spring on the back of the Lift cover; didn't help. I removed the lift cover and hydraulic pump. With the lift cover on the bench I moved the touch control lever up and down and It seems to be working fine? I disassembled the Hydraulic pump examined all the parts put on new gaskets and pump relief valve, i reinstalled everything back on tractor and lift is not working. When i look through the inspection hole "with tractor running and PTO engaged" and I lift up on the Touch control lever, the Control lever fork does not move far enough forward to push the Control Valve into the pump. Something is keeping the Control lever fork from moving forward enough? Any Ideas?

he [b:e56e8bfc4c][u:e56e8bfc4c]only[/b:e56e8bfc4c][/u:e56e8bfc4c] force available to move that fork is the spring from fork to end of cylinder. If spring is well, try adjusting the quadrant fore/aft....4 bolts.

JMOR Thanks or your reply. I was thinking about that as well, but i thought "how could that possibly be off, It hasn't moved". I had taken one of the four bolts off and the Quadrant control plate and it was centered in the slot. I wonder if it's possible that all that hard backing up into the dirt pile put too much impact on the control spring causing the Control lever fork or Control lever shaft to get bent or damaged? Well I guess if something did get bent slightly adjusting the Quadrant control might be enough to get it to work; i'll give that a try. And I suppose as a last ditch effort I could replace the spring that goes from the Ram cylinder to the fork, just in case it has lost too much of it's strength. Thanks again JMOR, Ill let you know what the result is in a day or two.

If the control arms were still connected it was probably just a stuck control valve. Grit or some other foreign material in the control valve.

Try shortening the afore mentioned spring or replace it will a new one. They do loose strength over time. I had to do this on my TO Ferguson about 25
years ago and never had any more problems with sticking valve .

Ok I got the lift working on the 2N. The lift had stooped working so I removed the lift cover inspected it and took apart the pump and inspected it as well. I put every thing back on the tractor and the lift wasn't working? Well here's where I admit my Ooops. When I put the lift cover back on I must have rocked the lift arms up. Here's where every body is saying to them selves you never allow the lift arms to be rotated up when installing the lift cover or the piston rod can fall out of the ram cylinder. Well that's exactly what i did. So I removed the lift cover again and reinstalled it with the piston rod in it's proper place. Lift is working great now. The funny thing is I'm not sure what caused it to stop working in the first place? Thanks or all your advice everybody I do appreciate it!
