48 8n steering box

Does anyone know of a rebuild service I can send a worn steering box to? I believe it is the "early style", and has the typical looseness. I could probably do it myself but I don't have the time, especially if I can get a rebuilt unit with core exchange quickly. Thanks.

Sectors are NLA. Worm is about $400, IIRC. Seals & bearings are another $50. When you're done, you still have a 4-bolt box. Best to try & find a 2 bolt box, even if it needs rebuilding.

There is another parts supplier that sells Just 8n parts and they also sell rebuilt / reconditioned parts . Their rebuilt steering box is $550 . You can probably ebay your used box for a couple hundred .

They sell new steering boxes made in China and the parts do not interchange even though they look similar . Ebay has used ones that you could buy and rebuild then swap out in a few hours .

Sometimes it is a little play in the gear box and a little play in the tie rods and a little more play in the spindles so changing one component will not give satisfactory results .

How loose is it now ? Does the steering wheel move up and down as you turn it ? Can you see oil dripping out or is it just oily ? Is it real stiff to turn ?

Nobody wants to think they are just going to do a half arse job but in reality you can take most of the slop out with some bushings , seals , and bearings in just a few hours . If this is a working tractor a quick clean and refresh job will last you 15 - 20 years . If it were a 55 Vette then it would be a different story . Your time and money will decide . You may have a local mechanic that can do the whole job quickly , might not be cheap cuz he has to pay bills also .
