Please help. 8n Runs with starting fluid but not without

I have just bought an 1950 8n ford with a
side mount distributor. It is still a 6v
system. It runs with starter fluid but not
without. We have drained and replaced the
fuel and checked all passages to the carb
and all are flowing freely. FuEl runs out of
the bottom of the carb freely. The jets in
the carb are free from debis and can spray
carb cleaner through them. I would like to
restore this tractor but need help getting
it running.

mandsean........quit waving that magic inna can around. 1st, replace yer FLOODED sparkies. NO ARGUE!!! Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025. 2nd, learn how to adjust yer carbie. Set yer down-pointing MAINJET to 2-turns and LEAVITT!!! Adjust yer side-pointing idlemix fer FASTEST idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle. Understand the difference??? Shuld be about 1/8-1/4 turn. Idlemix is bass-ackward; OUT fer lean, IN fer enrich. Adjust the BEHIND the carbie idle speed fer ennythang less than 500-rpms. May need to re-adjust yer idle-mix fer FASTEST idle. Remember the starting drill: key ON; 2-rumpa-rumpas on the starter motor; and then a QUICK PULL on the spring loaded choke. Shuld gittcha started.........HTH, the amazing Dell

ll that can not be true.......because, the starting fluid is fuel & it runs on that fuel & otherwise it is not getting fuel. It is your assignment to find out why not.

i've never replaced a flooded set of plugs. i flooded my N this spring on its first startup attempt of the season (yes, i am ashamed, but i did). i went and did something else, came back about an hour later, and it started right up. NO ARGUE!!!

I second what Dell and JMOR say. We need to re check the fuel issue. Espically since it's running when you spray the devil juice down its throat.

Set your carb like the other fella said, then with the ignition OFF take the air cleaner tube off and verify that no obstructions in air cleaner or its connecting tube. While you have it off.... The air cleaner tube and the ignition OFF turn the engine over by hitting the starter button while keeping your hand over the carb opening and verify that you have suction.

Also not sure if you did wires or not but if ya did make sure you have the correct firing order its 1,2,4,3 number 1 being closest to the radiator and four being closest to the seat.

If I had to bet it almost sounds like a mouse nest in the air cleaner or air cleaner tube. Check and post back what ya find

Good luck

We ned to know what "all passages running freely" means to you. There is a specific test that needs to be performed.

When I got my N I put about 1/2 gallon of fuel in the tank and screwed the fuel shut off all the way open. Nothing. Turns out you need a little more gas than that to get above reserve level. 2 turns out is normal, more turns get you to reserve which is often clogged. Check for flow from the bottom of the carb, and go from there.

You have more than just jets in a carb that can be plugged. If you have good fuel flow out the bottom of the carb and the jet is clear then odds are it's badly out of adjustment or it needs to be disassembled and properly cleaned.

es, some of those "other" passages are significantly small that the jet diameters.

(quoted from post at 10:22:55 06/08/17) I had the idle mix screw adjusted wrong it is now running great thanks for the help!
The idle screw adjusts the air for idle, doubt that was your problem, but the main thing is that it is running.
