New 8N owner

Just joined the site but have been reading all sorts of info on the N's.

So about a week and a half ago I purchased an 8N (allegedly a 1951) that had the transmission locked up.

Called my local towing company and got it hauled home and started the autopsy.

Yup, 2nd gear main and countershaft had some missing 'dental work'.

Got the new gears from a local source and I'm now awaiting the arrival of the new bearings so I can start reversing the dismantle process.

Hopefully next weekend I'll have something going back together.

Thanks Skip and Copperhead.

Unfortunately I don't have a working camera at the moment. (One of the many things on my 'would like to have/need to get' list).

I did however get an I&T manual with the tractor so hopefully I won't have any leftover or misplaced parts.

Once upon a time my wife said 'take a picture of that'.
I said 'I don't have a camera'.
She said 'You have a phone don't you'?
"DOH!!!"

Yea my phone has a camera but I may as well try using my toaster as quality is not all that good.

Well here's a phone pic with toaster quality.

Lessersivad,What kind of generator/alternator is on your tractor 6 or 12 volt/It looks like a large on in the picture.Like one for a emergency vehicle or something.

Den, as far as I know it's a 6 volt unit. At least according to the previous owner and the 6 volt battery that was in it.

The battery is toast and I have plans to do a 12 volt conversion.

Generator on right side=side mount distributor=late 1950 to 1952.

So the tractor FINALLY moves under it's own power.

All gears seem to function as they should and after tearing into the carb and enlarging the idle jet it actually runs smooth at idle speed (400 RPM). Also warm start without using the choke.

Ended up pulling the distributor and moving it 1 tooth because I couldn't even see the timing mark on the flywheel with the timing light at idle. Now the distributor is right in the middle of the adjustment slot and timing is set to specs.

Got the 12 volt conversion done and was able to use the original belt after modifying the pulley for the width.

Still have a bit to do to it (new plug wires and points, oil and filter change, straighten sheet metal and grill) but at least now if I need it out of the garage it should be a simple task of starting it and driving it out.

Thanks Henry. It took a bit longer than expected do to 'mission creep'.

66 years of other people 'fixing' stuff, I guess I should have known better.

Congrats on getting you N fixed. If you want to find a definite model year, there is a plate near the starter that has a code on it. It's easy to decrypt, it might be A010. The letter corresponds to a month, a=January b=February, etc., the next 2 numbers are the days of the month, 01=1 02=2 11=11 etc. The last number is the year. 8=1948, 9=1949 0=1950, etc. The tractor was typically completed around 30ish days after that date. The date is when the block was casted. Hope that helps out. Enjoy your new 8N.
