Fly wheel teeth

Just rebuilt my starter and before bolting it back on thought it
would be a good idea to look at the condition of the fly wheel.
The starter still doesn't engage like it should making a whining
noise more than turning over the engine. The starter bendix
was in good shape. It appears that the back side of a lot of the
flywheel teeth are worn off. See photo. Is the condition of my
fly wheel flywheel the reason why the starter spins too much.

laurencea......yes, no, maybe.......yer long starter shaft gotta bee squeeky clean. Sprayer with brake cleaner spray. letter drip dry......sometimes the flywheel teeth gitt worn from being pounded at the same place all the time. BIT TIP; puttchur tractor in gear and move-itt (push-shove) 1-ft or so (enny direction) will expose unworn teeth and be eazier to catch with yer Bendix.......HTH, the amazed Dell

Another thing to consider too, if your tractor was setup originally for 6 volt ... As they all were... And Sombody did a 12 volt conversion... You can run 12 volts to a 6 volt starter motor however it spins faster and could cause more wear on your teeth.

I have a guy who re builds worn out starters for me and always asks when I drop it off if it's going on a 6 or 12 volt tractor cuz he will configure the new motor guts that way so it spins at the correct speed and does not wear on the flywheel teeth.

I don't have time now to go into details, but just general thoughts. The teeth of the ring gear are not worn at the engine side. There is a starter reman in Salt Lake City who makes 12 V Toyota starters which will fit the 8N and other vintage Ford engines. The bendix gear engages from the engine side, and it cranks over at a more moderate rate than the 12 V converted original starter. You can maintain the starter safety tranny switch with a simple bosch relay. I have made this conversion to a customer's tractor which otherwise would have needed a new ring gear, and it has worked out very well. There is reference to this conversion in the archives, I think it may have been posted by Hobo.

If you are interested in more details, post another question in a new thread.

Laurencea ,If the teeth are still 1/2 there on the front side and if it has been converted to 12 volts, you could get you a gear reduction starter and it would last for years without splitting it to replace the ring gear. The gear reduction starter works off the front side of the ring gear. They are great starters to.

Thanks Den for finding the hot link. That is the starter I used as described below. One possible problem was the mounting flange was not positioned correctly for the 8N. It was drilled for the optional position as needed by the 8N. There are 4?? socket head screws which need to be removed and the flange turned (maybe 45*, maybe 90*??) and screws replaced. The new holes are already drilled, so this is a simple task to do.
