replace spindle bearings

My 1947 9N driver side front wheel spindle is sloppy and needs bearing and bushing replacing. After removing the wheel, front axle spindle arm bolt and attempting to drive the entire spindle out, it became apparent it would only move about 3/8 inch. Is there some secret to removing the front wheel spindle? Thanks to all who answer.

Thanks for the reply. Although I noted the woodruff key, it looked like it was captive and would slide along a channel in the spindle housing. It is item 24 in attached dwg. Is there a way to remove it from the top of the spindle housing?

Thanks.

The woodruff key must be removed to get the spindle out. It is rounded on the inside of the spindle so if you take a hammer and punch you can hit it on the bottom like you are trying to drive it into the spindle. That should cause the top of the woodruff key to start rolling out and then you can use a pair of diagonal cutting pliers and pop it out.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a go. Methods like you suggest vs fumbling along are critical. Thanks again

My Dad taught me a lot of what I know. He never taught me about Woodruff keys, tho I am darned certain he knew about them (He worked in a hardware store before he became an industrial tool salesman). I always got them out with Vise Grips and brute force. Your method is far more elegant. I thank you for giving me another thing to teach my grandsons ( 1 is 17.5 years, one is due around Christmas ).

You are blessed with Grand children who are interested in "ancient" technology. My Grandkids, & Great Grand Kids are interested in music and fashions, but then they live in the Big City.
