1949 8N, Just swapped a front mount for a side mount engine. The front mount had the squarecan 12 volt coil with a ballast resistor and a one wire alternator.
The side mount has a 3 wire alternator currently wired to only the STA and Field and the Grd. is empty. It has a modern type round coil and a regulator. It also has a round ceramic resistor measuring 3.4 ohms. The wiring is like a birds nest from terminal block to terminal block, they have two toggle switches and a small push button toggle switch which I assume is acting like the original tranny push button. It also has a four post solenoid. I'm electrically challenged but have done lots of archive reading.
Is it true that the one wire alternator has an internal regulator? Is it true that I can get an internally resisted round coil? The current wiring on the sidemount is really bad, connections are breaking off as I handle the wires. I don't mind the one wire alternator so much, I can let the tractor warm up before exciting the alternator and it would simplify the wiring. Can I then eliminate the regulator and the resistor by using the one wire alternator and an internally resisted coil. Then use my 3 wire solenoid and my original push button start button?
