Electical connundrum

1949 8N, Just swapped a front mount for a side mount engine. The front mount had the squarecan 12 volt coil with a ballast resistor and a one wire alternator.

The side mount has a 3 wire alternator currently wired to only the STA and Field and the Grd. is empty. It has a modern type round coil and a regulator. It also has a round ceramic resistor measuring 3.4 ohms. The wiring is like a birds nest from terminal block to terminal block, they have two toggle switches and a small push button toggle switch which I assume is acting like the original tranny push button. It also has a four post solenoid. I'm electrically challenged but have done lots of archive reading.

Is it true that the one wire alternator has an internal regulator? Is it true that I can get an internally resisted round coil? The current wiring on the sidemount is really bad, connections are breaking off as I handle the wires. I don't mind the one wire alternator so much, I can let the tractor warm up before exciting the alternator and it would simplify the wiring. Can I then eliminate the regulator and the resistor by using the one wire alternator and an internally resisted coil. Then use my 3 wire solenoid and my original push button start button?

you mention "STA" and "Field" and regulator, which makes me suspect that your alternator is something other than the ubiquitous GM 10SI, so we need to first know what alternator you have.

I have two one wire alternators sold by this site, and they both start charging as soon as the engine starts. I start with throttle lever about 1/4 way up. One has a magneto so no cil or resistors needed. the other still has the 6 volt coil so I used the resistor that came with the kit to drop the voltage for the 6 volt coil. works great. No external voltage regulator required.

To clarify, I obviously have two alternators available for the wiring:

ON the old frontmount engine is a one wire Delco Remy with the only connection marked "BAT" The following also appears on the casting,
1105 565 Y 78A
15 R
8263 12V NEG

On the newly installed engine sidemount the alternator has no manufacture name on it and looks old. It has 3 connectors available, BAT, GRD, and FLD.
ASSY 2095060 appears on the casting.

I apologize for the confusion as my eys are pretty bad and I originally Thought the "B" was and "S" on the 3 wire unit.

Use the Delco one wire alt, no external reg required. NAPA IC14B is a coil needing no external resistor on 12v system.
Go with 3 terminal solenoid.

this topic always puzzles me, because mine (from a local dealer) does too. are we just special?
