I keep an 8N around the farm so I'm not trying to mow against loafing sheds with a 300 horse tractor. They sure are handy.

The governor on mine is shot. I welded the gear to the shaft about 10 years ago and have been meaning to fix things since then. There's lots of play in the shaft and arms contributing to not getting quite enough rpm's. I adjusted the stop to get a little more speed, but it's going all by ear. Anyone have a good way to hook a tach to a front mount? I read on here about mechanical ones someone held against the pto shaft from Harbor Freight. The guys in the local one looked at me like I was crazy when I I asked for it.

Got a hand held GPS? If so look in the owner's manual or the FO4 and find the speed vs rpm chart. Put it in an appropriate gear on go down the road until you reach the speed. Note where the throttle is on on the quadrant and you will know what the rpm is for that position. Or, just do what Bruce suggests.

ou can snake a little 20 GA telephone type wire thru the coil to distributor gap and attach it to points & your tach....works fine. At HF, just ask for a photo or optical or laser tach and point it to which ever shaft you stuck the reflective tape onto.
