Ford 2N 6V to 12V Conversion

We want to convert our Ford 2N from a 6V to a 12V system. We have just purchased a 12V coil to replace the 6V coil currently there. We have been looking at the wiring diagrams for the 12V conversion.

Our questions:

1. Is the wiring for the coil the same in the 12V system as it is in the 6V system? In other words, does the red wire still run from the top of the coil to the resistor block located in the front of the tractor?

2. Do we need a new resistor block for the 12V system?

3. Besides the wiring for the alternator and the charging system is there any other wiring changes? The wiring diagrams do not seem to indicated anything else.

We understand that we need to use an alternator instead of a generator for the 12V system. We are not too concerned about the charging system yet - we have the wire from the 6V generator disconnected at the terminal of the cut-out relay. We only want to focus on starting the tractor using the 12V system first. The charging system will be completely disconnected in this initial setup.

Any help would be appreciated!

1. yes.

2. no.

3. remember that u are changing from positive ground to negative ground, and don't turn on your headlights, assuming u have them, until you've replaced them with 12v bulbs.

You don't really even need a new coil, just a $3 resistor.

And you could use a generator if you really wanted to, but an alternator is a whole lot cheaper and simpler.
