41----9N asking price

Let me start by saying, my neighbor passed away and his wife wants to sell his tractor. Its
a "41" 9N. We live in central Wi., tires are good, sheet metal good, hyd. work not painted
true 9N colors, now the rest, It's not running and had problems with the gas tank. I
pointed this tractor out to him 3 years ago and only seen it running twice maybe, what his
wife told me she thinks he paid $4,500 for it.....If I would have known that I would have
steered him away. So with all that said what do you guys think it's worth? thanks for
your help, Craig

Not running in years a $500.00 deal and you had better check the tires where they have been setting on the ground for cracks.

If tires are not split open from rot and hood and fenders decent, $800 would be tops for me with it not running, and that's taking a risk.....

I paid $4000 for my good running (everything working) 8N.

It came with a FEL and a Woods M5 mower deck and a roll over box scraper. Ten years later I'm still using it.

Some here will scoff at that price but for my area, Southern California, it's not a bad price at all. Not everybody has a beat up old "N" sitting in a field like they do back east.

None of my business as to how close of a neighbor you are.......but a new battery & cleaning the carb & fuel screens might get her $1500-2000.

Otherwise, it's not running, so it's a parts tractor as others are saying.

One side of me says it's really unfortunate that someone would put that kind of money in a tractor that on a good day might be worth $2500.

But the other side of me says anyone who drops $4500 on a $2500 tractor deserves the screwing they got for not checking Craigslist for the going prices in the area.

Which you might want to do to show the lady that $4500 or even close to it is ridiculous.

I saw an add in Craigslist for a restored 8N a few years ago; close by, so I went to look at it. Besides the fact that it was on battery charger when I got there (" They are all hard to start") I just couldn't believe the $5000 asking price for what was not even a $3000 tractor. Why $5000? Because he paid $2k for it & had $3k worth of work done to it.

Uh huh. You always get your money back on those sort of investments. Yep.

A decent running tractor with a loader and mower is a good deal at $4k about anywhere .

To the OP , post a dozen pics even if they are not great pics we can tell you a lot more .

I just bought a 1940 9n in fine running condition.... But the clutch was stuck for $300. I got the clutch un stuck and now have a perfect running 9n that I only paid $300 for.

Thinking about selling my 1941 9n, engine completely re built. Re painted... Mint condition... Perfect working order .... With a Wagner front end loader mounted on it.... New re built pump on the loader and all new hydraulic hoses and I will probably be asking $3500 for the whole package but probably will settle for $3k and that's for one with a loader in mint condition completely re done.

There is a very nice 9n on eBay now with good sheet metal all around and good paint and the buy it now is $3k

To Bruce..... I have valued your posts and help in the past, and agree it's a whole lot more than what I would consider it for (worth) wise, just trying to help her out and maybe if the funds are there... take it off her hands. I really don't need another 9N I already have a 2N, just trying to help.....Craig

bought my running 2N for $700 good little machine...prices are ranging from 1000 up to 3500 depends on the condition.

Offer what you think its worth right now problem solved... Are get it running for her so she can get all she can. If she is not willing to put $300 in it for your time and parts at the most its worth $300.

In 1999 I paid $1100 for a non running 9n. It started with just a battery swap. I knew the owner the tractor was on his retirement auction. The first bid was $1000. I gave the second bid just trying to help him out. Next thing I knew the auctioneer was asking for my number.

I have bought and sold a few N series tractors here in the north east.

Once they are running they are a very versatile great lil tractor.

That said any tractor not running is for parts or for repair and the price should reflect that. Those tractors go for $100 if they have been stripped of parts and need a lot... Basically a engine, tranny and rear end. And not much else.

Once a tractor is running the bottom around here for one is $900 if it needs lots of cosmetic work. Add $500 if it's a 8n, add another 500 for a working Sherman auxiliary transmission... Working.
Add $1000 -1200 if it has all tires mint and on good rims. Add another 200-500 for wheel weights depending on the type and how many.

Front end loaders are iffy... They are generally not worth a bunch not mounted on the tractor... $250-300. One mounted on a tractor running with all good hoses and a good bucket with no major welds or repairs will add about 500-1000 to the price.

Jungle Jim loaders like the old wagners are going to be on the lower end $500 a more modern step through will add 1000.

The only exception to the general rules of thumb I listed above are for any early serial number tractor with aluminum components. Like aluminum hood, grill, dog legs, steering box, dash,

These command ridiculous prices... Looking at $10k for one needing restoration.

Once restored correctly I have actually seen them sell for $50-60k in the right auctions with the right advertising.

Good luck!

Around here running 9Ns go for $600 - 900. Maybe a little bit more if the tires are newer. The local three times a year auction always has several 9 and 8 Ns and this is what they bring. Non runners are $300 up to maybe 500, depending on tires or a Sherman on them.

If the problem is only the tank, you should still be able to get it running for her, but as she is your friend's wife I would not want to be involved oil buying it from her.
