Bearing splitters ?

Are you suppose to be able to remove bearings , ie transmission input shaft bearing , and NOT mangle the cage so you could reuse the bearing ?

I have 5 8n transmissions disassembled plus lots of extra parts . I need to replace chipped gears and bad bearings / races . I can press off all of the bearings except the input shaft . I can get them off by not without distorting the frame that hold the roller bearings .

I know a new bearing is cheap but that is not the point . I have purchased a cheap bearing splitter set . Maybe I just need to do some relief grinding ? The cheap set worked smoothly .

When using a bearing separator you are pulling/pushing against the outer race/ball bearings not the inner race. If it's a medium heavy press odds are you will damage the bearing. Has nothing to do with the tool and everything to do with the setup.

OK , That gives me a direction to go in , if I read this right . I was trying to wedge the tool between the gear and the inner race to force it off . I will play with getting the tool behind the roller bearings and gentle pulling it off . I recon I was thinking of "splitting" wood and not "pulling" a bearing . I vaguely remember a post by Hobo using some all thread on a splitter so I picked up some when I went to town today .

If I am successful I will post some pics , if not , you won't hear a thing

I figured out the outer races with a one screw two jaw inside puller . Took a little Jerry rigging to make a plug for the open centers but I will never have a problem again , until I can't remember where I stored my jig . :?:

Its rare I bust a bearing cage but it happens even with dedicated tooling for the job... A bent cage is not a deal killer straighten it out if the bearing is usable... If I can I bang the end of the shaft again a hard surface and try and get the bearing to walk off some so I can get a puller under it. If it has a heavy gear behind it the weight of the gear will walk it off...

In your case the input bearing may be a consumable  If its good leave it be.

I have a nice bearing removal set the tooling is like C channel you use two C's slide it around the bearing then a pipe over them to retain and clamp completely around the cage... On tuff'Ns it will sometimes bust a cage.
