Quick attach ORC Not So Good

When I had my top cover off on my 8N, I changed the PTO to a 1 3/8" so I could use a quick detach ORC. Well, I gave the 8N a good workout today mowing brush. I worked about two hours.

That quick attach ORC doesn't work as good as the regular one did. With the regular pinned on one I could stop and shift gears without waiting for the drive shaft to spin down. It worked beautifully. I don't worry about the drive shaft pushing my tractor forward, I just liked to be able to shift gears with the shaft still spinning.

With the quick attach one I have to wait for the shaft to come to a full stop to shift gears or it will grind. I pumped it full of grease until it was coming out of the unit. It just doesn't work as good as the old one did.

Trouble is, I can't even put the old one back on since it's for a 1 1/8" shaft.

bought one several years ago from agrisupply & have no complaints. Can't remember if I shifted gears as you describe or not.

It is not working properly. It should overrun and it is NOT!

With the engine off and pto engaged can you turn the powershaft and overrunning clutch clockwise. If not, the ORC is
faulty!!

Evidently you didn't read my post close enough.
robably locked up due to too full of heavy grease. :p

With the engine off and the PTO engaged and the tractor in first gear, I can turn the shaft clockwise. Even with the shaft off of it, I can turn the ORC clockwise and it clicks about every quarter turn.

It's just not turning free enough and it's keeping my transmission shaft turning. Seems to be a pretty heavy click. I don't think my old one did that. Seems like it is not engaged enough to still push the tractor forward but it's engaged enough to keep the transmission shaft turning enough so that I can't shift gears without it grinding. Doesn't work like the old one did.

With the mower running, if I push in the clutch, I can hear the heavy clicking.

OK, it didn't come with instructions on how many pumps to pump into it. Perhaps you have the magic number?

That's how I've always used a grease gun. Pump till you see the old dirty grease start coming out. Didn't realize I was doing it wrong.

It's just got enough internal friction in the over running mechanism (possibly from all new components and/or the grease) to spin the unloaded transmission gears but not enough to push the tractor when they are engaged. In other words it is working just fine and it's nothing to worry about.

I'm not worried about it. It's just not working fine enough for me. I want it to work like the old one did. I really don't think the grease is the problem. It's like eighty degrees outside and the thing is sitting in the sun.

" I want it to work like the old one did." Me too, but then that is a different subject!

Don't they have a pill for that now?

late in his career, after a particularly strong game, a reporter asked Steve Yzerman how he still managed to play at such a high level at his age. his one word reply rhymed with Niagara.

Guys 2 people I knew were killed because the overrunning clutch had problems. GET a new 1 before it happens to you.
