my old friend grew up on a large family farm in AR, still own it,
they owned 5 or 6 big tractors for the day.

he said his dad drained the water out of each of the tractors during the winter months,
but the one they used to haul wood or other farm chores they keep filled with some type alcohol that kept it from freezing, also the old truck and car.

times were much simpler but harder back then,

Oh yea, another one of those "Well, an old farmer told me......" stories.

Usually followed by "to use straight weight oil in an N" or "non-detergent oil only". Or, "don't set the battery on a concrete floor".

One of the best ones I've heard lately is to use straight anti-freeze. Don't dilute it. Now, just how hard is it to find the freezing point of straight anti-freeze? Or to read the directions on the bottle?

bruce, i know many folks who say don't set a battery on concrete. i'd love to hear more about this particular old wives' tale.

Waaaaay back in the day, automotive batteries were glass cells in a wooden box. Cells leaked, wood got wet & conducted current.

 ty, bruce :)

i was wondering how concrete could overpower a pretty darn good insulator in plastic. answer: it can't :D

I remember my Dad using alcohol antifreeze. I still have a couple unopened cans on the shelf. That alcohol was produced in this area of NY. It was made by burning wood with very little air and extracting chemicals ect.. A by product was charcoal.
