I have a 2n that starts up and runs great, but today I started it up twice and both times it sounded like a jet engine noise was coming from someplace other than engine. When I turned off the engine, the noise continued and petered out after a few seconds. I think the noise was coming from the starter, but I am not quite sure. What's going on?

Sounds like your starter is continuing to run after the tractor starts. Does it have the original starter switch or has that been replaced with some type of solenoid?

op the tin band off that covers the brushes & observe the armatures commutator. If it doesn't stop spinning within seconds of starting, it likely means that starter bendix is not disengaging from flywheel. If that is the case, it won't take long to ruin starter if continue to run like that.

My solenoid stuck in the closed position and caused the starter to run continuously. Changed the solenoid, solved the problem.

es, that can happen, but clearly not relevant to his problem, as he did not need to disconnect the battery to stop the starter. A nice side anecdote, perhaps?

I replaced the starter switch about six months ago, but it does seem to stay engaged when I tighten it the whole way.

So when you tighten the bolts holding the switch to the steering box the starter engages? Either your switch plunger is too long (wrong switch?) or your thumb button linkage is stuck. Like most others here, the plunger on my new switch was too short and I had to lengthen it with epoxy and washers.
