just an observation

I am a newbie when it comes to farming so if this question sounds stupid forgive me....I have noticed on the most but not all Ford 8n , 9n and 2n that the headlights are removed. My question is that because of vibration or just lack of not needing them or am i missing something..just purchased a nice 2n and the lights were removed from it also...just curious.

Removed or just never added............they didn't come from factory with headlights.

Most of my tractors have lights. I very rarely use them. Even on my newer Kubota. I see a lot of older tractors where the lights are damaged
by running into things and are not fixed. If there are no holes in the doglegs, the tractor never had any lights. They were dealer add ons.

Most of mine don't have lights. Too scared to go out
after dark. The boogie man might get me besides
ain't nothin that get wait for the light of a new day.
Lights where optional. It the tin knock out ain't
punched out than never had em

Yep, as JMOR said, lighting kits were always dealer accessory options til the Thousand Series models. The 9N lighting kits used the big truck-like CM HALL headlights which utilized a reflector and single snap-in bulb. These were the days prior to the invention of the sealed beam lamp. The clear glass lens had "TRACTOR LITE" on it and the CM HALL name. These are hard to find in original decent condition and sought after by early 9N restorers. Ford then supplied headlights shortly after with their own, had the FORD trade name 'Tract-O-Lite' stamped one the periphery of the housing. These were made by Ford at their Flat Rock, MI Lamp Factory. Used up thru 8N production with the 'tear-drop' style buckets, then changed to a more rounder type bucket. Not at first, but Ford soon added punch outs to the doglegs so if an owner purchased lights, he simply knocked out the punch outs to fasten the lights to the doglegs. The sealed beam lamp was a huge innovation. Industry Standard UPC (Universal Part Classification) numbers are: 6V = 4019 ... 12V = 4419. There's a LINK to some info on the CM HALL headlights too...

well said, kirk. u speak for me too. when i did my rebuild winter before last, i just cut the headlight wires, they'd been installed with no connectors. i still haven't gotten around to hooking them back up, altho i've got a lovely watertight automotive connector for them now when i finally do. seems to me one of the wires broke off the WD's light switch a few years ago. i don't think i've ever bothered to fix it.

My 43 2N has headlights and I only turn them on on the rare occasion that I venture out on the main road. I also use a battery operated flashing red LED light for the rear.

"It the tin knock out ain't punched out than never had em"

I sold a pair of doglegs the other day that had no light holes.
They also did not have knock outs. They were solid metal.
Were those original or aftermarket?
They certainly were not new. I'll have to see if I can find a pic.

Thanks for that information Tim...I have the lights for mine but not the attachment parts, guess somewhere these can be bought if I decide to put them back. New learning for an old dog ....kinda liking it too, stimulates my pea brain.
