Instruments

I bought some nos gauges for my 8n. The instrument s were actually for the naa.
My question is : there is a spade terminal on the back of each one. So are they lighted?

That's probably what your terminal is for; most likely 12V.

Originally their was a light in the center of the dash to shine
down on them so you could see them when the lights were on.

The round, black housing directly in front of the steering
column below the center gauge in this picture is the light.

Will the proofmeter hook up ok. Did all the proofmeters have the same hookup on back. I'm trying to figure out how to post a pic. But can't.

It might hook up, I haven't tried it, but I suspect it would
register the wrong speed and hours because the 8N hooks
to the governor and the NAA to the hydraulic pump.

Also.....I do have the little light thing. I'm using these on an
8n. So do the instruments themselves light up or just the bulb.
Not fully understanding why you would need both. And how to
know if they are 12v. My 8n is 6v. What would the light look
like with only 6v??

our 'suspicion' is 100% correct, as the proof meter cable turns at 1.29 times crank speed on 8N , but only 0.825 times crank speed on the NAA.

Mike.......yeah, the spade is fer internal lite. 12-volt bulbs with 6-volt battery gonna bee DIM. You know you kenn gitt 6-volt bulbs that will exchange with yer 12-volt bulbs, don't you?........the amazed Dell

Michael,

Photo Uploading in Modern View.

Forget that "Choose File" button lower down that you've probably tried.
That method hasn't worked since this YT Forum developed problems a while back, where that normal photo uploading method ceased to function as did the option to go back and EDIT (change) what you have already successfully posted.

Below where I am typing this to you right now,
You'll see: ADVANCED POSTING TOOLS in a red banner heading. [/color:10cf6d5076]

In the blue colored options there, click:
Upload Photo[/color:10cf6d5076]

THEN in new pane that opens --> Choose File

Navigate to your desired photo

THEN ---> Upload

THEN if you are satisfied that the visual preview is the desired photo, click the CONTINUE button just above the little preview of your photo. The photo link will appear in the text body of your post.

Finally, click the usual big SUBMIT button that you normally use to post a message.

Don't worry about filling in all the other fields in that pane; i.e., Make, Model, Year etc. It isn't necessary to add that info.

Good point Dell. I need to get some 6v bulbs. These may be 6v. No markings on the bulbs. I was thinking the bulbs should be 6v anyway. Did they use the 12v bulbs in '53 ? I could get the correct gauges but I already had these. They were nos. thought it would be nice to have lighted gauges on the 8n. Also would I use the same proofmeter cable on this one that's used on the 8n one??
Thanks mike

The 8N proofmeter cable will fit in the NAA proofmeter.
It's just a square shaft. I still believe it will read incorrectly.

If they are back lit, they are most likely aftermarket.
There would have been no need for the dash light on the NAA
if the originals were back lit.

Ammeter will work, oil pressure gauge will work if you have
good oil pressure on your 8N. Otherwise they used a lower range.

Temp gauge will work if you drill and tap your head to install it
or use one of the in-hose adapters to connect it to, but you will
need to find a place to mount it since the 8N didn't have one and
there's no place in the dash for it.

I agree that back lit gauges are nice when using them in the dark.
This is also one use case where idiot lights really "shine".

FYI: Ford used the induction style 'loop' ammeter starting with the 9N at serial number 4000 and the oil pressure gauge was 0-50 PSI up until the NAA then went to the 0-80 PSI gauge. Spade lugs don't sound like original to me though. Pictures???
