Three Point Function 48 Ford 9N

Help: My three point had gotten so slow that I had to wait 20 min for it to raise. I changed the Mineral Oil, (5gal). I then started the tractor, moved the lever and the three point raised so fast it startled me. I then lowered it back down. Once down, it will not move again regardless of time. Ideas?

You need to give us a better ID on your tractor.

You might have an 8N made in 1947, but you don't have a 9N made in 1948.

Check John Smith's site to ID your tractor & post back: http://www.oldfordtractors.com/

I can't read it. Having some others try it. It is definitely what they called a Red Belly according to the site you gave to me. Just don't know the year yet, so it would be an 8n. The only reason I called it a 9N is what I was told when I ordered the carb from Yesterday tractor. Thanks

In any case, remove the right side round port & see if control valve(s) are moving in response to touch control handle. yes/no?

hi mike, and welcome to YT :)

check your engine's serial number, and the other details on the tractor identification page. i own a red belly - and it is most certainly a 2N, not an 8N ;)

many 2Ns that hadn't been sold yet were painted with the red belly look by dealers after the 8N came out. also, many have been repainted by owners.

assuming the serial number is not easily visible, have a look at your shifter. 9/2Ns have 3 forward gears. 8Ns have 4.

3 forward gears likely rules out an 8N, altho it's possible to put a trans from a 2 or 9 into an 8.

are there any dates cast into the front side of the rear axle trumpets? does the point of attachment for your toplink have one hole or three?

Mike........yer 3-speed 2N, hazza hydraulic leak. Remove yer 6-in roundy dipstick plate behind yer right heel and lookie fer leaks. A drip or two is normal but SQUIRTS are BAD. Many all grey 2N's have been repainted like the more colorfull red belly 8N. That and 5-bucks will gittcha a cuppa KAUPHY at Starbucks. Iff'n I hadda make a guess, I'd guess you blew the PAPER gasket that holds yer butt-buckett on. TIP: swipe yer paper gasket with WARM WATER sponge. That'll RELAX the gasket and will fit the top cover holes more better. While the 7/16 bolts are spec'd 37-ft/lbs, you kenn also use the german virgin spec: "goot'n'tite"........HTH, the amazed Dell

" It is definitely what they called a Red Belly "

So, you're going to ID the tractor by the paint color? Keep reading. There are a lot more ID markers on that tractor other than paint that can be changed over night. Does it have a 3 or 4 speed transmission? Both brakes on the right side?

The reason everybody is trying to determine if you have a 9N / 2N or an 8N is that the lifts are two different animals. The 8N has position control in addition to draft control (small lever under your seat for switching between) while the 9N / 2N only has draft control (no lever under your seat). This makes for two different set ups.

As jmor said "In any case, remove the right side round port & see if control valve(s) are moving in response to touch control handle. yes/no?"

This is the first step in determining what is wrong. Whether a 9N / 2N or an 8N setup they both use levers coming down from the top to the bottom to move the control valve in the pump, though they are a bit different. Is this lever moving in conjunction with the quadrant lever? If it is the next step is to figure out if it is moving the control valve in the hydraulic pump in & out.

Yes, Mike, you need a proper problem solving method before you continue. A 3-speed tranny is a 9N or 2N; a 4speed tranny is the 8N model. Engines were swapped out however so continue with other identifiers. As stated, 9N/2N hydraulic systems were different than the 8N and removing them takes extreme caution and knowledge to know how to and which is which. On the bottom of both top covers is the hydraulic cylinder and control mechanisms. You must know how each one is connected and how to disconnect it BEFORE lifting the top cover off. Four bolts secure the cylinder to the base of the top cover and their heads are visible under the seat along with bolts that secure the top cover to the housing. These four bolts must NOT be taken off until the top cover is removed and you must not remove he cover until the linkage has been disconnected. Get technical manuals and seek help before attempting to proceed. What do you mean Mineral Oil? Mineral Spirits? These systems use a GL1 oil available at TSC, NAPA, and CNH dealers...
