Sherman Trans

In my quest for a decent engine block I saw what looked to me to be an 8N with a Sherman transmission. There was a lever on the left side of the transmission. Not much left of the old tractor other than that but I was wondering if it is worth going back to try and buy it. What do they do step up or step down. I really don't need to go any faster but I was wondering just what they were.

Skip, if it had the dog leg lever it is a combo and that would be a great addition for your 8N, especially since you already have the engine out.

Thanks Den I think I will go back this weekend and see if I can buy it. From what I am reading it is sort of like a high low range addition to the trans is that correct

Skip, I waited for a few years before I could replace my step-up with a combination from John Smith.
I cannot put into words what that marvelous hunk of gears can do for you.
Granted, it will change your PTO speed as well, but this is what I do;
Bush hog in low for the thickest of lot clearing.
Move in high when running on the gravel road point a to b.
Regular shredding in direct drive for 540 PTO speed at 1500 rpm.
I always, always put it in low working in tight spaces with heavy stuff hooked up or carrying.
Red rock manufacturing has rebuild kits and John Smith may have some hard to find gears etc
Hope you can resurrect it!

Skip........I had my eazy starting 8N 3-yrs before I found out the 3-gear (straight thru) on my Sherman. Pull OUT about 1-inch and pull BACK. Forward is LOW; straight back is OVERDRIVE; and out'n'back is straight thru like no Sherman installed. It hazza "dog-leg" shifter handle.........HTH, speedy Dell

Heck yes! Rebuild it prior to install. I can't imagine mowing without it. Twelve forward speeds and three reverse is a nice addition.

I looked though the fence this evening when I could get by there and I think its on whats left of a Jubilee will it still work on an 8N and if it will how does it attach

I pulled mine and sold it quickly for $700 . I never used it for mowing and only used 4th & Overdrive to drive down the road . 12 forward gears but you have to come to a complete stop to shift . As expensive as they are I did not want to rip it out doing something fun , er , I mean foolish . If I could only keep one tractor and it was an N , then I would want the Sherman combo , and a V8 . Of course your mileage may vary .

(quoted from post at 23:21:00 04/26/17) Does it bolt between the transmission and the clutch or the output side of the trans

it goes in front, skip. iirc, the howard sits behind.

Between the clutch and the transmission input shaft.

The Jube I just rebuilt had one I didn't know it had until I got into it. Took me $500 worth of parts to rebuild it. LOVE it, wouldn't want one without it. Was blading beside my building and chainlink fence, used 1st gear and low. Easy to control, nice and slow.

And I get 21-22mph in 4 high on the road. :)
