9N sputters and backfires

I would like to know if anyone has had this problem with their 9N.
Mine runs fine for about an hour but it seems as it gets hot it will sputter and backfire as I am discing. Once I take the load off it will run but I can't continue discing until it cools down for about an hour and a half or two.

Sounds like a bad coil--check spark as soon as this happens..bet the spark
will be weak and probably yellow in color.

PF3.......it takes about 1-hr to melt the insulative tar inna the 4-nipple squarecan dizzy. Yeah, about 2-hrs to cool the tar so you kenn run again. A clever farmer could figger out a heat shield to keep from blowing HOT AIR from radiator fan on the dizzy. Think aluminum foil? Remember, points are set (0.015) on the kitchen table. Really. Just un-snapple the capple and remove the 2-bolts and walk. Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts and install the rotor. Rotate the rotor until the OFF-SET tang fits the OFF-SET slot in the camshaft. Now tighten the 2-bolts and re-capple the dizzy. Ennytime you haff runnin' problems, replace yer sparkies. Recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025. ........HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

As Tom & Dell are both saying, it could easily be your coil. So, as soon as it starts to sputter, get out your adjustable gap spark checker* and see if your spark will jump 1/4". If it won't, get out your 6 inch jumper wire (tip # 50) and jump the ignition switch.

If you plan to do the tune up Dell suggested, see tips 7, 66, 67 & 68.

*If you don?t own a spark checker w/ an adjustable gap, buy one. In the meantime, an old spark plug w/ the gap opened to at least ?? will work. Ground it to a rust & paint free spot on the engine turn the key on & look for a spark.

Are you using no alcohol gas? If so,
use premium unleaded. I've had that
problem before and it was because the
residues from the alcohol gets hot and
ignites the gas before the spark plug
does. There will also be alot of carbon
that shoots out of the tailpipe upon
starting.
Hope this helps out.

Thanks. I will check that as soon as I can get back out to the ranch.

Thanks Dell. I like the way you explained it. I will surely try your idea as soon as I get back to the ranch.

Thanks for replying Bruce. I just got my 9N a few months ago and just am starting to use it more and this is the first problem I ran in to.
