Well, this tractor has been on a neglected journey since it entered my family. My Dad decided to buy a couple tractors a 1940 Farmall H and one day I noticed this Ford 9N/8N next to the pole barn.
I asked him about it and he said it ran long enough after he bought it to get it off the trailer and that's where it died. He was a busy, non-mechanic, so there it sat. That was maybe 8 years ago.
Three years ago he passed away and this Ford tractor made it across the street to my Grammas farm where it sat until last September. I finally was in a little better position and was able to begin dealing with it.
My buddy and I picked it up and took it to his house. I bought all the material assuming it was a 9N as the serial number is 9N37880*.
It had a bent valve on one of the cylinders so I replaced it, ground all the valves and seats, bought new springs. headgaskets, etc. Did a little tune-up and stuff.
So, for the longest time I didn't return to it last winter but my friends kept tinkering with it and could not get it to run. Carb kept leaking fuel it would only run for about ten seconds or so. Even with a new carb.
Two days ago I picked it up and brought to my garage. I messed around with the float, changed the main jet, tinkered with the distributor, checked the plugs, checked the wires going to the right cylinders.
And it ran and stayed running. Pure joy.
However, no oil pressure on the gauge. (we did change the oil with 30wt before we attempted to start it.) I pulled the line off going to the gauge and felt no oil or really any air pressure coming through. So that is where I have left off.
But in my research tonight. I have found that while my block serial number says 9N. Everything else about the tractor says it is an 8N. What year, I have no idea.
It has 4 speed tranny, an 8N dash, 8N rims, etc.
How should I continue to treat this tractor? As an 8N going forward? Treat the motor the same way, is it the same motor as found on an 8N? Should I be concerned?
It is a 12 volt conversion.
I am going to attempt to prime the oil pump this weekend. But my feelings are it might be quite gummed up.
I can post pictures if need be for extra solid advice. Let me know!
