Block question

Guys I was given a front mount distributor engine today. It was disassembled in boxes in the back of a friends shop. My question is, is the block casting the same as a side mount dist. Can I use my cam and accessory housing on this block and make it a side mount engine ? It has the original .040 sleeves so I will get it bored for the .090 sleeves. My VBM is good for a lot of things but it has some slop in it so I will take it to a friends machine shop to get it bored for the .090 liners. I am missing one front main stud so I will need to find one with the safety wire hole in it. Also while it is there what do yall think about the oil pump with the 9/16 gears. I am going to have the mains align bored anyway so I might as well get the bigger oil pump if yall think it is worth the effort. Thanks Skip

One difference in blocks would be the mounting for the generator.. The front mount has the generator on the right. Side mount on the left.

I looked at my 9n. It doesn't have mounting holes for the generator on the left side.

I don't think you would gain anything switching two the other style oil pump.

There are some other differences, the oil fill is in a different position on the block so I don't think the gen can mount on the left side on a 9n block,I ran into something else but I can't remember at this time what it was.

I have an 8N sidemount distributor with a useless block, I am looking for a new block and I had a friend who gave me an engine today but it is a front distributor engine. All I wanted to know was is there a huge difference between the bare blocks. I am going to put a small single wire Denso alternator on it so if the only difference is the generator location I can fabricate my own alternator brackets move the alternator to the left side of the engine and use the block I was given with my accessories and make it a side mount engine.

generator mounts are the player if you can work around it fab it up before you spends yer money on the swap... Oil filter location is no Big'E it mounts to the head use the side-mount head...

Front mount blocks don't have a hole for TDC work around it by what ever means it takes to provide a TDC indicator...

If it were me, I'd either use the front mount as a front mount or keep
looking for a side mount block. Easier to change the other direction.

Skip,A left side alternator mount for a Denso is not to hard to fab.I mounted one on my 43 with a mag on the right side.If you want email me and I can send you some pics of the alternator mounting.

I got your email and checked yesterday and I do have a side mount engine. It's buried in the back behind a dead dozer. Will check condition in a couple days.
Here is a photo of my 8n mower. It's a 1947 with original block and side mount conversion with 12 volt chevy alternator. Stick with full side mount or front mount IMO it's not worth the trouble.

(quoted from post at 09:15:51 04/14/17) I m beginning to think you are right. The main reason I wanted a late model 8n was the side mount dist

Keep the side mount life will be good... Den we always want pix as long as it it not all thread farmerized

Thanks Den I am going to check one more place today if I don't have any luck I will get with you. The one place I hate to go near has one and the jerk wants $1,000 for a bare block. He kept telling me how rare they were and how lucky I was to find the one he had. I just thanked him and left. I have no idea how that guy stays in business

Skip,Here are the pics of the Denso mounting with 5/8"belt and alternator pulley,Hobo,I had to find the pics.No farmer all thread used.LOL,I Just didn't have the top adjustment bracket made yet and on it when the pics were taken. The bottom front bracket goes around the water pump inlet and the bottom rear bracket bolts up to the water pump tab. Also I know the mag when the pics were taken was turned 180%,I changed that later.Note the correct long front axle pin that I made for the hand crank war model that was a job to machine the internal crank latches for it,as no one makes new pins for them.

Are they even more rare when the front bolster attachment
point has been snapped off, brazed back on and broke again?
On the bright side, it still runs.

Thanks Den I got lucky and found a complete engine for a hundred bucks. Before I loaded it up I pulled the dipstick and it had good oil with just a little milky condensation on it, I pulled the side covers and it has adjustable lifters with the lifter bores already drilled. I pulled the plugs and stuck my little Harbor Freight borescope in the cylinders and there was no water in them at all. I stuck a large crescent wrench on the crank nut and it turned over easily. Brought it home and steam cleaned it. I think I may have a winner with this engine I will pull the pan later tonight when I get time. THANKS for the pics that's whats I am going to use. I made the brackets and used that same little alternator on my wifes Austin Healey I did for her,(see pics) can you tell me what year this engine is from the S/N? Guys thanks again for all of the help you folks are the greatest.

Skip That is a 1952,518927 engine with 5149 made after it,and 76892 made before it for the 1952 8N year model.

Careful TOH, selling a wife can get expensive! ;)

You should see the one I have been wasting my time on its a 59 3000 and I am putting a 302 Ford in it. The Red car is a numbers matching 3000 BT7L. But I also bought one just for spare parts should I need them and now I have a complete extra car so I have pickled the engine and transmission and put them in the back of the shop and I have a 5.0 roller Ford engine and a 5 speed that I will put in it. My wife and I met in elementary school and darn near grew up together and we both enjoy the old cars and airplanes. She does all of the interior work and I do all of the mechanical and pant and body work

Here is my 73 Corvette we resurrected it from behind a bar in Savannah it had a small tree growing out of it when we brought it home I wish we had taken pics of it. I built a 383 small block for it and we love going on Saturday night milkshake runs to Sonic in it with the T tops off

I have a winner I just finished pulling the engine down and I will be darned if it isn't like new inside, It looks to have been just rebuilt with .090 sleeves, the rods and mains look really good as do the cylinder bores. I will just have the crank polished re ring it with new bearings and gaskets and let it rip. This engine is a FAAAAR cry from what I was trying to work with.

[b:f390940e49]"can you tell me what year this engine is from the S/N?"[/b:f390940e49]

yes :)

"I will just have the crank polished re ring it with new bearings and gaskets and let it rip."

If it is in that good of shape, why not just fire it up and go?
I may have lost track of what your intentions for the tractor are.
Are you building a trailer queen or something to use?
Either way, it ain't gonna fall out of the sky. ;)

That is great Skip that you found a good correct engine,at a great price to!After all the bad luck with the other one it's time for some good.

The only thang I like about both of those cars is folks throw stupid money at them and like it :D Stupid money stacks up just as high and maybe higher 8) I did not take pix of my latest vett stupid money job as it was mostly all under car work...

One thang about a vett is they are all one off's no two are alike... They are pure junk and throw away cars but the money spent on'em still stacks high...

Good,,, you found a engine you are comfortable with that's not stupid money spent...

I have less in the Vette than I will have in this 8N, I tell everyone I don't smoke, I don't drink, I dont play golf and I don't run around on my wife what else do I have to spend money on.

I paid $600 for my first vett and spent $6000 on it... In the end all I wanted was my money back and I got it... Working for $6 a hour was the outcome :x It pays better to work on someone elses :D

Thanks Den I appreciate it I figured of I got a good block out of this I would call it a win but when I got it on the stand and started taking it apart I was shocked at how good it looked inside.

"We don't have trailer queens and we don't have junk either. All of our tractors look good and run good."

I understand perfectly. I have both. Some are works in progress.
Others are parts donors. Like that broken block I pictured.
I'll run it until I get my good one rebuilt.

What I won't do is fix them until they're broken.
I'm glad to hear you found one close at a good price.
Post some pictures once you get it done! :)

"I paid $600 for my first vett and spent $6000 on it..."

I had a '63 split window and '66 convertible.
Wouldn't give you a plugged nickle for another one [b:08a2e16466]to drive[/b:08a2e16466].
"America's Sports Car" is more like a muscle car of the era.
Plenty of power, depending on what you bought or built, but
lacking the suspension, steering and brakes to handle it.
Sure, they look cool. I'll give them that.
Pace cars only as far as performance on the track though.
I have not owned one newer than the 60's. No desire.
If I found a '53, maybe.

I agree with you there, my wife and I went to ride last weekend and I said "this thing rides like a truck and my wife answered no your truck rides much better
