8N Hydraulics Operation Question

Back in the late sixties I ran one of these tractors as a kid and it seems like you could adjust the hydraulic up and down over the full range of the control lever. I just got a 1951 8N and it seems the hydraulics only work for the top 1/3 of the lever travel. Is that normal? Also, if you put stay bars on the drawbar to pull a trailer, where do you leave the hydraulics set or does it matter since the PTO would have to be disengaged to avoid lifting against the stay bars?

Thanks...

" it seems the hydraulics only work for the top 1/3 of the lever travel" ARe you sure you are in position control (vs draft control)? If so
try adjusting the quadrant by loosening the four bolts and moving it forward (or backward) and see if that improves the position control.

" if you put stay bars on the drawbar to pull a trailer, where do you leave the hydraulics set"
Turn the PTO off and put the lever all the way to the bottom. The stay bars control the height of the drawbar.

Great, thanks. Guess I need to do a bit more reading about the draft mode, its operation, and how to change it it...

Little handle under the seat on the right side. Horizontal is draft mode; vertical is position control.

I finally made it back home from traveling and checked the lever position. It was in the vertical position for position mode control. So, the question I still have is about the range of the touch control lever. It seems to only move the top third of the travel from the arms full up to full down with my brush hog attached. Very little fine control so it makes it very hard to adjust to a good height for mowing, that is, a little movement of the touch control makes a big change in the lift. Trying to figure out if that is normal, if not, then what I need to fix/rebuild.

Thanks.

I use chains to limit how low the mower will go on my 8n, got tired of chasing the height of it., move lever all the way down and the chains set the height.

Just following up on this. Still wondering about the normal operation of the touch control. Full up to full down is only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the distance on the arc. Seems like full up should be at the top and full down at the bottom. Is this a problem with the lift cylinder needing repair? Again this is in position control.
