oil pump overhaul

(quoted from post at 00:00:01 04/17/17) Are the kit and a 9/16 reamer the only things I need to overhaul an 8N oil pump?
o one can honestly answer that question without a thorough/knowledgeable examination. What if bushings & shaft so worn that gears have gouged the housing?

If you are gunna do it yourself buy a insurance plan. Its cheap and consist of a few extra bushings :D My machine shop charges $15 to hone them out in his rod recondition machine they have always been dead nuttz... I will admit I have not had good luck with the tool and its mostly ME the operator...

Dan known as Rust Bucket Dan had a good write up on how to use the tool. This is not a place to experiment if you go there buy a insurance plan. TOH plan is a good investment also.

Now that is good advice from a man who has been there ;-)

I would also add that if I were already planning on paying to have the mains realigned I would never install a pump (new or old) with 9/16" gears....

Really good explanation, Hokie! Thanks very much. My 8N has low oil pressure when hot, so I'm going to have to do this sometime. Sure hope I can rebuild the old oil pump and don't have to align bore the block.

The number one cause of low oil pressure is probably worn bearings with the oil pump coming in a very distant second.....

Well that's cured, I just picked up my crank from the machine shop, rods at .020 and mains at .010. Rods are resized with new bushings. I just figured as long as I was here I would get new gears and a bushing for the pump. I can do that on my milling machine I just set it up flat and parallel at X and Y and run the reamer through it.

I just checked mine and both pumps have the 3/4 gears and look to be in good shape no hitting the housing, no cutting into the cover and the pump gear feels snug and wont wobble. I think I am gonna leave it alone.

Cool... Other than the pick up tube are were it mounts to the oil pump the other overlooked place oil pressure could be affected is the cam journals.

I have overlooked the pick up tube to the pump clearance issue its been discussed here if I can find the link... It has not been that long ago it was a winner post...

(quoted from post at 20:41:38 04/17/17) Why not?

For the same reason Ford made the change. The smaller displacement pump lacked the volume needed to keep up with even a mildly worn engine and low oil pressure was/is a chronic complaint.

i think the same way when someone questions my non-show tractor 12 volt conversion :)
