8N engine speeds up then slows down

I replaced the coil on the tractor. now when it starts and runs the governor is constantly moving. The engine oscillates constantly, goes fast then slow. Not enough power to run properly. I can send a short video.

Not typical of a coil problem. Tell us more: Why did you replace the coil? Was it doing this before you replaced it? What happens when you move the throttle lever up and down? Does your engine take a strain on the engine when using an implement?

fluidlogic.......why'ja replace the coil? they're virtually bullet proof, same with the capacitor; points (0.015) do need replacing. Try this, tear off'n a strip of heavy brown paper grocery sack ...or... stick the corner of $1-bill (cheap) between the points and PULL. Polish the INVISIBLE CORROSION off. Simple, eh? As fer yer carbie, learn how to adjust it. Set the down-pointing mainjet to 2-turns and LEAVE-ITT. Adjust the side-pointing idlemix fer FASTEST idle, NOT SMOOTHEST idle, understand the difference? Shuld be about 1/8-1/4 turn. .........HTH, the amazed Dell

Fluidlogic,More information is needed about your tractor. Is it a front mount or side mount distributor,6 volt or 12 volt system?. Why or what reason did you change the coil?

I changed the coil because I had no spark and there was no voltage going through it. It is unrelated to this issue.

I think the problem is in the carburetor. Could it be that the needle under the float is sticking?

Hi,

Its not the coil, I had to change it because I was not getting spark. It must be a fuel problem. It bogs down when using the bush hog.

Thanks,

Sounds like it is starving for fuel and your governor is working.
Do you have at least 2 gallons of gas in the tank and the gas
valve open only two full turns, not all the way?
You can check fuel flow through the carb by pulling the drain plug
on the bottom then turning the gas valve on. The stream should
be fairly steady, not dribbling and should fill a pint jar in 2-3 minutes.
Catch it in a glass jar so you can check it for dirt and water.

First off, don't rule out everything except fuel because you changed a coil. That does not eliminate the ignition system. There are many other components in the ignition system, and a front mount setup converted to 12 volts requires special attention. Especially if you actually burnt up a coil.

Well I cannot do that now. It will not run unless the choke is pulled all the way out.

Royse asked you at least three questions, none of wich require the engine running. Check these items with the engine off.

It very well may be a fuel problem. Go back and one at a time check the items Royse asked about, then post back with results

A simple alligator clip on the choke will hold it out. But of course that isn't going to fix anything, but it will keep it running for you to check things.

I was having a similar issue with my 9n, still am. It was bogging down under any load, brush hog, pulling fence, etc. then I was having issues starting and now it won't start. Still haven't figured it out. I thought first it was fuel issue, I then realized I wasn't getting spark on two plugs. Went through and serviced a lot of things, have spark now, but still won't start. Now I too am thinking, could it be carb. I'm at a loss and I'm trying to avoid taking it in somewhere since I have already done a ton of work.
