A Word To The Wise

I wanted to be able to use a quick connect push button ORC on my 8N. My 1 1/8” PTO had no groove in it for one. So, I changed out the shaft to a 1 3/8” shaft and got the quick connect and it worked well. I also had a set of Pat’s Quick hitches on the lift arms that work quite well.

Well, I purchased another tractor, a MF202 Workbull. So I decided the workbull would be the box blade tractor and the 8N would stay the mowing tractor. So, I decided to remove the quick hitches from the 8N, since I wouldn’t be changing implements on it any more. I remove the hitches and went to hook the mower back up and discovered that my mower shaft now was about two inches too long. Just no way to get it on.

Well come to find out that the new 1 3/8” PTO shaft is an inch longer than the old 1 1/8” shaft was. And the quick connect ORC was like an inch and a half longer than the old ORC. The only way it worked was to put the Pat’s Quick Hitches back on it. They actually pushed the mower back about four inches and everything works.

Just be aware that if you change your PTO shaft the the bigger shafts are longer as well as the quick connect ORC being longer.

imple as snot! Just saw an inch of both halves of the telescoping shaft. duh?

My neighbor had a Ferguson TO20 and wanted to use a ORC with a
Dearborn sickle mower. We had to shorten the PTO shaft four inches
to make it work.

(quoted from post at 21:07:26 04/14/17) Simple as snot! Just saw an inch of both halves of the telescoping shaft. duh?

Not so simple. The mower has the square shaft on it. The round outer shaft slips over that shaft. The outer shaft has a "U" joint on one end. On the other end, it has about a five inch section of inside square shaft hole. This is welded to the outer round shaft. So, I don't want to make that square part any shorter. I would have to cut that part off the shaft then shorten the shaft and reweld the square sleeve on it or weld on a new square receptacle piece as you see in the picture below.

i remember the extra length every time i see that clunky extended cap that comes with the bigger shaft. i noticed a couple of things today, was a lovely bright day in the pole barn. when i painted the new cap, i knew it wasn't the right red, but hey, it was red. today i noticed that it has since turned into something that looks more like kubota than ford color. i also took another look at the back end of the old shaft, which i replaced the moment i discovered my finish mower's drive shaft didn't fit. i confirmed that it has no groove. mangled and abused splines? u betcha. groove - nope. i must have never even paid attention to the splines in good light before, i just capped it and put the bigger shaft in. i was keeping it on the basis of u never know, but it became scrap today.

People need to think about what they are doing.
That old shaft lasted for 60+ years as it was.
Why?
Because there is NO reason to use an ORC on a sickle mower.
