How to know what rebuild kit to order

It is time for a top end rebuild of my Ford 9n tractor.
I want to turn this around asap so I want to order the kit BEFORE disassembly. My problem is... which kit to buy?
Is there a way (serial #, or?) to know my piston sleeve width and number of piston rings without tearing down to find out?
Any and all help will be appreciated!

No.

And you won't know what size bearings you will need until you check the crank.

You ask: How to know what rebuild kit to order

The correct way is to disassemble the engine and determine what is currently in there.

IIRC a diamond before and after the serial number means .090 sleeves, and a star indicates .040 sleeves. That's how it would have been when it left the factory. But that doesn't mean someone hasn't bored an early block for .090 sleeves. That is a very common procedure. Most of these olds Fords, if used as intended have been rebuilt any number of times.

Also I personally have never removed dry sleeves without first removing the crankshaft. While it may be able to be done, I wouldn't. Seems all to likely to damage the crankshaft.

DITTO to what the others have said. It would be foolish to buy any new parts until you know what exactly to buy; engine kits especially. What is the serial number? Is it an early 9N? By 'turn around' are you planning on selling it right after or that you just want the process to go without any hiccups? A word of advice is to always expect the unexpected. Are you doing the project yourself or farming it out? If you are doing the wrenching, what experience do you have with an engine rebuild? Do your homework, ask questions, research the archives to find out all there is on rebuild projects. Shortcuts don't work. There are some good DIY U-TOOB videos put out by J&D Productions and sold by STEINERS and others. There's a lot more than just the engine when you get down to it -electrical, hydraulics, rebuilding existing original parts, et al. So, do not order any parts until you know for sure what to order. Most engine kits are stocked and can be shipped to you in 3 days or overnight if you have the $$$.
